Status, Social Security number and a Missouri ID
There is no post-arrival registration in the US: your electronic I-94 record is your status. In the first weeks you need a Social Security number if you are work-authorised, or an ITIN if not, then a Missouri credential. Missouri gives new residents 30 days for the licence and the plates. The local wrinkle is that if you live in the City of St. Louis, every county-level office you need — assessor, collector, recorder — is a city office, because the city sits in no county at all.

Missouri gives new residents 30 days for both the licence and the plates. The step nobody warns you about is the personal property tax: Missouri taxes vehicles annually, and the licence office will not issue plates without a paid tax receipt or a Certificate of Non-Assessment from the assessor. Vehicles in the city and three surrounding counties also need a Gateway Vehicle Inspection Program emissions test. A foreign licence is not treated as an out-of-state licence, so expect to sit the tests.

What to know before you go
The City is not in the County, and the line changes almost everything
CriticalSt. Louis City separated from St. Louis County in 1876 and has never rejoined. It is an independent city belonging to no county, with its own assessor, collector of revenue, courts, police and school district. Cross that line and your income tax, your property tax bill, your children's school district and the office that issues your vehicle tax waiver all change. Nothing in a postal address tells you which side you are on.
The 1% earnings tax follows the city line, in both directions
CriticalSt. Louis City levies 1% on the earnings of residents wherever they work, and on non-residents for work actually performed inside the city. Employers withhold it, and a non-resident who works part of the year outside the city claims the difference back on Form E-1R — it is not adjusted automatically, and the employer must verify the days. Voters reauthorised the tax on 7 April 2026 by 84.76% to 15.24%; state law forces the question back onto the ballot every five years.
You cannot get Missouri plates without a personal property tax receipt — or a waiver
CriticalMissouri taxes vehicles, boats and trailers annually as personal property, assessed at 33⅓% of value, and the licence office will not issue plates without either a paid receipt or a Certificate of Non-Assessment from the assessor. A new resident who owed nothing last year gets the certificate free, but has to go and ask for it — in the City that means the City Assessor at City Hall, not the county. Nobody tells you this until you are turned away.
Thirty days for the licence and the plates, plus an emissions test
ImportantMissouri gives new residents 30 days to obtain a licence and to register a vehicle. Vehicles registered in St. Louis City and in St. Louis, St. Charles and Jefferson counties must also pass the Gateway Vehicle Inspection Program emissions test — petrol vehicles from model year 1996, biennially and on title transfer. A safety inspection is separate and is not required in a vehicle's first ten model years or 150,000 miles.
Missouri exempts capital gains entirely — the only state that does
ImportantUnder legislation signed in July 2025, individuals may deduct 100% of capital gains reported federally when computing Missouri adjusted gross income, effective for tax year 2025. Missouri is the first state in the country to do this. Ordinary income still runs on a graduated scale to 4.7%, so this is narrow but genuinely valuable if you hold equity or sell property.

Know where the basement or interior room is in your building on the day you move in, keep a torch and shoes there, and understand that a warning gives minutes rather than hours. BJC and the Washington University medical school operate as a single clinical and research complex in the Central West End and are between them the largest employer in the region. The med school's research funding is out of all proportion to the city's size.

One of the densest concentrations of plant science anywhere in the world, built on the Monsanto legacy and now anchored by Bayer's Creve Coeur campus and the Danforth Center. It is the sector that makes St. Louis distinctive rather than merely mid-sized.

Boeing Defense, Space & Security, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA West), Leidos
Boeing's defence arm is the region's largest private employer and builds the F-15 and F/A-18 in north county. The NGA's new West campus in north St. Louis brought thousands of cleared geospatial jobs into the city itself — most of that work requires US citizenship.

Edward Jones runs one of the largest brokerage branch networks in North America from south county, and the Federal Reserve's Eighth District bank is downtown — the source of the FRED economic database that economists everywhere use.

Anheuser-Busch's Soulard brewery still runs and is still the North American headquarters; Emerson and Ameren are Fortune 500 companies headquartered in the metro. It is a genuinely deep corporate base for a city this size.

World Wide Technology, Centene, Block, Cortex Innovation Community, Bullhorn
Cortex, between the Central West End and Forest Park Southeast, is the district where the university spinouts and the venture scene sit. World Wide Technology is one of the largest privately held technology firms in the US and is headquartered here.

Forest Park
Nature · Central West End / Dogtown
1,300 acres — larger than Central Park — laid out for the 1904 World's Fair, holding the art museum, the zoo, the science centre and the history museum, all of them free to enter.
Local tip: Four major museums with no admission charge is genuinely unusual in the United States and it is paid for by a dedicated regional tax district. The Saint Louis Zoo and the Art Museum are both free every day; only special exhibitions charge.
Gateway Arch National Park
Landmark · Riverfront, downtown
Eero Saarinen's 630-foot stainless steel catenary curve, the tallest monument in the United States, with a tram of tiny pod cars that climbs inside the legs to a viewing slot at the top.
Local tip: Book the tram in advance — it sells out, the pods are genuinely small, and there is no other way up. The museum underneath was rebuilt in 2018 and is far better than the Arch's reputation suggests.
City Museum
Culture · Downtown west
A ten-storey former shoe warehouse rebuilt by a sculptor into a climbable structure of salvaged bridges, aeroplanes, caves and a rooftop Ferris wheel. There is nothing else like it anywhere.
Local tip: Go on a weekday evening when the school groups have gone; it stays open late on Fridays and Saturdays and is genuinely better for adults after dark. Wear long sleeves and shoes you can climb in — you will be crawling through steel tunnels.
Tower Grove Park & the Missouri Botanical Garden
Nature · South city
A Victorian walking park of ruins and painted pavilions, adjoining the oldest continuously operating botanical garden in the United States, founded 1859, with the geodesic Climatron glasshouse at its centre.
Local tip: The Tower Grove farmers market on Saturday mornings is the best in the city and the surrounding neighbourhood — Bosnian, Vietnamese and Ethiopian along South Grand — is where you should eat afterwards.
The Hill
Food · South-west of downtown
A compact Italian neighbourhood that is still actually Italian — bakeries, groceries, red-sauce restaurants, and fire hydrants painted in the tricolore.
Local tip: The unglamorous places are the good ones. Buy provel and salsiccia from a corner grocer rather than eating at the restaurant with the largest sign, and walk past 5447 Elizabeth Avenue, where Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola grew up opposite each other.
Cahokia Mounds
Hidden gemLandmark · Collinsville, Illinois — 20 minutes east across the river
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest pre-Columbian settlement north of Mexico, with Monks Mound — a hundred-foot earthwork with a larger base than the Great Pyramid.
Local tip: Almost no visitor to St. Louis goes, and most residents have been once as a schoolchild. Climb Monks Mound at sunset with the Arch on the horizon; it reframes the whole region as a place that has been a metropolis before.
