Skatteverket assigns a personnummer when it registers you in the population register (folkbokföring), and the legal test is whether you intend to live in Sweden for at least one year. Under that, you get a samordningsnummer instead, which is a weaker instrument that many banks, gyms, insurers and healthcare systems handle badly or refuse. Everything downstream — a bank account, BankID, a phone contract, a doctor, a rental contract — runs off the personnummer. Register in person at a Skatteverket office as soon as you have an address and a permit.

BankID is a personal electronic ID issued by Swedish banks, and it is used far beyond banking: tax filing, healthcare appointments, insurance, parcel collection, rental applications, second-hand marketplaces and most public services. You need a personnummer and a Swedish bank account to get one, and the bank account normally requires an in-person visit with a passport and proof of your reason to be here. This chain — personnummer, then bank, then BankID — is the actual first-month project, and nobody warns arrivals how much stops working without it.

Stockholm's regulated rental stock is allocated by Bostadsförmedlingen strictly on accumulated queue time, and the register holds hundreds of thousands of people. Waits for an inner-city flat routinely run past a decade; outer suburbs and newly built stock are shorter but still years. Register the day you decide you might move here — queue days cost almost nothing and are the only currency in that market. In the meantime you will rent second-hand, which is legal, normal and considerably more expensive.

Sweden recognises a valid foreign licence for one year from the date you are entered in the population register. Exchange without testing is available only for licences from the EEA, Switzerland and Japan. Everyone else — including holders of American, Australian, Canadian, Indian and British licences — must pass the Swedish theory and driving tests to keep driving after that year. Test slots in Stockholm are scarce and the practical test is demanding, so anyone who needs to drive should start the process in month two, not month eleven.

Foreign key personnel can have 25% of their salary exempted from Swedish income tax and employer contributions for up to seven years. There is a simple alternative qualification: a recurring monthly income above 1.5 times the price base amount, which is SEK 88,801 per month for 2026. The catch is procedural — the application must reach Forskarskattenämnden within three months of your first working day, and there is no discretion to extend it. Relief worth a substantial sum is routinely lost because nobody mentioned the deadline during onboarding.

Stockholm sits at 59° north. In December the sun rises around nine and sets around three, and heavy cloud means many days never get properly light. Temperatures are moderate by Nordic standards and the city runs normally throughout, but the light is the thing that actually affects people. Swedes counter it structurally — bright interiors, candles at every meal, outdoor exercise regardless of weather, vitamin D as a matter of course — and newcomers who treat those as quaint rather than functional tend to have a harder first winter.
