Things to do in Thiès

Where locals actually go — culture, neighbourhoods, nature and a few hidden gems.

Editor's picks

A local's shortlist — the places worth your time first, each with a tip.

Manufactures Sénégalaises des Arts Décoratifs

Culture · Central Thiès

The state tapestry works founded in 1966, where weavers translate Senegalese paintings into large Aubusson-technique tapestries on a rotunda gallery — the city's most distinctive institution and one Senghor personally willed into existence.

Local tip: Ask to see the workshop rather than only the gallery; watching a cartoon become cloth is the point. Pieces are priced by the square metre in the hundreds of thousands of CFA francs, so treat a visit as a museum trip unless you are serious.

Fort Faidherbe & the regional museum

Landmark · Central Thiès

The 1864 colonial fort that anchored the French position in Cayor, now the city's historical museum — and a direct link to the Lat Dior story that Senegalese history teaching puts at the centre of this region.

Local tip: Small and easily done in an hour, but it is the right first stop: the museum frames the railway, the resistance and the strike as one story rather than three, which is how residents tell it.

The station and the rail workshops

Hidden gem

Landmark · Quartier Ibrahima Sarr

The colonial-era railway quarter, named for the unionist who led the 1947–48 Dakar–Niger strike: the station buildings, the workshop sheds and the housing built for the men who worked in them.

Local tip: Walk it with someone whose father or grandfather worked on the rail — this is oral history rather than signage, and the quarter's meaning is entirely in what people tell you about it.

Tivaouane

Culture · About 20 km north

The seat of the Tijaniyya brotherhood, the counterpart to Mouride Touba and Senegal's other great religious centre, which fills for the Gamou commemorating the Prophet's birth.

Local tip: Unlike Touba there is no city-wide prohibition regime here, but the same rules of respect apply: dress covered, ask before photographing, and go with someone who can introduce you. Check the Gamou date each year, because it moves.

Réserve de Bandia

Nature · About 45 km south-west, off the Mbour road

A fenced reserve in the baobab savannah with rhino, giraffe, buffalo and antelope reintroduced onto former farmland, and an easy half-day from the city.

Local tip: Go at opening or late afternoon and take the guided vehicle rather than your own. It is a reintroduction project rather than a wild ecosystem, and it is honest about that — worth going in with the right expectation.

Kayar and the Niayes

Hidden gem

Food · About 50 km north-west, on the coast

One of Senegal's biggest artisanal fishing landings, at the end of the market-garden belt: hundreds of pirogues on an open beach, and the auction that sets the fish price for half the region.

Local tip: Be there when the boats land in the late afternoon, buy from the beach rather than from a stall, and take a cool box. The road runs through the Niayes, which is worth the detour for the market gardens alone.
