Culture · Zona Río

The city's cultural anchor — a spherical IMAX dome nicknamed La Bola, a serious museum of the Californias, gardens and a concert hall.

Local tip: The Museo de las Californias inside it is the single best hour for understanding why this city looks the way it does — the border, the Prohibition years, the maquila boom. Do it in your first month, before you form opinions.

Nightlife · Centro

The old tourist strip, past its Prohibition and its 2008 collapse, now a genuinely good bar and craft-beer street with the original Caesar's restaurant still on it.

Local tip: Skip the ground-floor tourist bars and go up: Pasaje Rodríguez and Pasaje Gómez, the covered arcades off Revolución, hold the independent bookshops, galleries, coffee and mezcal bars that locals actually use.

Nature · Western edge, on the Pacific

A residential beach district where the border fence runs down the sand and into the sea, with a seafront malecón and a long line of seafood stands.

Local tip: Walk the malecón at sunset and then eat at the taco stands rather than the restaurants. The fence itself is worth seeing once and is a heavier experience than people expect — the murals and the painted coffins name people who died crossing.

Food · Zona Río

The city's proper market — dried chillies, mole pastes, cheese, piñatas and produce, in a working building rather than a restored one.

Local tip: This is where you buy chillies by weight and get told how to use them. Go early, bring cash, and pick up a bag of the dried chiles de árbol and a wheel of queso fresco from the same aisle the restaurants buy from.

Landmark · ≈100 km south-east, via Ensenada

Mexico's principal wine region — dozens of small wineries and some of the country's best restaurants, in a dry valley of dirt roads and boulders.

Local tip: It is a designated-driver day and the roads are unlit dirt in places, so plan the return before you plan the tastings. Weekdays are far better than weekends, and the smallest producers are the ones worth the drive.

Nature · East Tijuana

The volcanic hill that dominates the city's eastern skyline, with a hard hike to a summit view over the whole binational conurbation.

Local tip: Go early with company, and go for the view of the two cities as one continuous grid running to the sea — it is the clearest possible explanation of what San Diego–Tijuana actually is.
