Voters passed Proposition 206, the Tucson Minimum Wage Act, in November 2021. The city rate reached USD 15.00 on 1 January 2025 and rose to USD 15.45 on 1 January 2026, against an Arizona state minimum of USD 15.15 — and the city rate is indexed to inflation each January and rises automatically to match any higher state or federal figure. Tipped work is USD 12.45 with a maximum tip credit of USD 3.00. Only Tucson and Flagstaff have their own wage floors in Arizona, so a job advertised at the state rate inside the city limits is being advertised wrong.

A.R.S. § 28-910, universally called the Stupid Motorist Law, makes a driver who goes around a barricade into a flooded roadway liable for the reasonable cost of the emergency response, up to USD 2,000 — police, fire, rescue and the responders' salaries. Tucson's washes fill from rain falling miles away in the Catalinas, so the road can flood under a blue sky above you. A vehicle floats in surprisingly little water. Turn around; the detour is minutes and the alternative is a body-recovery statistic every monsoon produces.

Evaporative 'swamp' coolers add moisture to dry air. They cost a fraction of refrigerated air to run and work perfectly well in May, and they stop working once monsoon humidity arrives in July and August. Older midtown and west-side stock is full of them. Look at what is on the roof, ask what the July electricity bill was, and treat this as a dealbreaker rather than a detail — Pima County recorded 125 heat-related deaths in 2025 and 146 in 2024.

Sun Tran buses, the Sun Link streetcar, Sun Van paratransit, Sun On Demand, Sun Express and Sun Shuttle all carry passengers at no charge, at the direction of the Mayor and Council. Fares were suspended in March 2020 and every attempt to reinstate them has failed — the Council voted 5–2 in March 2026 to keep the system free. It is the largest fare-free transit system in the state, it is the single biggest cost difference between living here and in Phoenix, and it makes the streetcar corridor from the University through Fourth Avenue and downtown to Mercado San Agustín a genuine car-free option.

Tucson stopped relying on pumped groundwater and has been banking its Central Arizona Project allocation underground since 2001, recharging it in basins along the Santa Cruz River and at Pima Mine Road and then recovering it as needed. The Arizona Department of Water Resources renewed the city's designation of assured water supply — a demonstrated hundred-year supply — finding more water available annually than the city projects using. Aquifer levels under parts of Tucson have risen rather than fallen. The real exposure is not the city: it is the unincorporated fringe and the private wells outside any provider's service area, and future cuts to the Colorado River. Check which water provider serves an exact address before buying anything rural-adjacent.

For roughly three weeks from late January the Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase fills every hotel room in the city, several of which are gutted and turned into showrooms. Rates triple, short-term rentals vanish, and the traffic around I-10 and the convention centre is nothing like the rest of the year. If your arrival date is flexible, arrive in October or March. If it is not, book accommodation months ahead rather than assuming you will sort it on landing.
