Landmark · Binnenstad

At 112 metres the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, standing apart from its own cathedral.

Local tip: The gap between tower and church is not a design choice — a tornado in 1674 collapsed the unfinished nave and it was never rebuilt, so the paving on Domplein marks where it stood. The 465-step climb is guided-only and needs booking; the view reaches Amsterdam on a clear day.

Nightlife · Binnenstad

A canal with two levels — a street above and a wharf with vaulted cellars at water level, unique in the world.

Local tip: The wharf cellars were medieval private docks; goods came off boats straight into the merchant's basement. They are now terraces and restaurants, and the water-level side is where you want to sit. Twijnstraat at the southern end is the good end for food shopping.

Culture · Prins Hendriklaan, east Utrecht

The 1924 De Stijl house that made Gerrit Rietveld's name, UNESCO-listed and preserved exactly as built.

Local tip: The upper floor has movable partitions so the whole space reconfigures — you only see it work on the guided tour, which is the only way in and must be booked well ahead. It sits at the end of an ordinary residential street, backing onto a motorway that was built later and much resented.

Food · West, near Centraal

A dense Turkish, Moroccan and Surinamese high street ten minutes from the station, and the cheapest good food in the city.

Local tip: Come for the greengrocers and bakeries rather than the restaurants — produce here costs a fraction of the supermarket. The Ulu mosque marks the centre of the strip, and the Saturday morning trade is the real thing rather than a market for visitors.

Nature · 20 minutes east by bike

Ancient woodland and country estates along the Kromme Rijn, the closest thing the city has to a forest.

Local tip: Cycle out along the river rather than taking the bus; the route is the point. The pancake house at Rhijnauwen has been feeding cyclists for a century. The woods have survived two motorway widening fights and remain a live local political subject.

Landmark · A ring around the city

Nineteenth-century forts built to flood the countryside and stop an invading army, UNESCO-listed since 2021.

Local tip: Utrecht sits at the centre of the line, so a ring of forts is within cycling distance and most have been converted into cafés, campsites, breweries or nature reserves. Fort aan de Klop is the easiest — twenty minutes north along the canal, and you can camp there in summer inside the earthworks.
