Getting set up in Laos
Work permit, visa & stay permit card
Laos separates three documents that most countries combine: the visa, the work permit from the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, and the stay permit card from the Department of Immigration. All three are needed, they come from two ministries, and they expire on different dates. Your employer drives most of it, which is why doing this without an employer is so hard.

Foreign residents in Laos can convert a home licence to a Lao one through the transport authorities, with a translation, a medical certificate and proof of address. Vientiane has clinics that handle everyday medicine competently, including internationally staffed centres used by the diplomatic and development community. It does not have the hospital capacity for serious cases, and the standard response is evacuation to Udon Thani or Bangkok. What to know before you go
Save 1623 before you need it
CriticalLao emergency numbers are reported inconsistently and some published lines simply do not answer. In Vientiane the service that reliably comes is Vientiane Rescue on 1623 — a volunteer-run ambulance, fire and rescue organisation founded in 2010, operating around 200 volunteers and eight ambulances from stations across the city, and a 2016 Ramon Magsaysay Award recipient. Put it in your phone on day one and tell your household about it.
Thailand is 25 minutes away and it changes everything
CriticalThe First Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge puts Nong Khai a short drive from central Vientiane, and Udon Thani's international hospitals about ninety minutes. Residents cross for hospitals, shopping, Bangkok flights and anything the Lao market does not stock. Medical evacuation to Thailand is standard practice, and the bridge authorities will generally open outside the 6am–10pm hours for a genuine emergency.
Traffic side flips on the Friendship Bridge
ImportantThailand drives on the left, Laos on the right. Traffic on the First Friendship Bridge runs on the left as in Thailand, and a short signalised loop on the Lao side flips it over in about two hundred metres. Take it slowly the first few times, and be alert on the Thai side that everything you learned in Vientiane is reversed.
The kip has been through a lot — think about how you hold money
ImportantThe kip lost roughly 60% against the dollar between 2022 and 2025 before stabilising, and inflation, though falling, was still around 10% in 2026. The Bank of the Lao PDR's Decision 11/BOL of January 2025 reinforces the kip as the primary domestic currency. Keep working balances in kip, hold savings elsewhere, and do not assume a kip salary holds its value across a two-year posting.
Almost everyone here is sponsored, and there is no way around it
ImportantLaos has no retirement visa, no digital nomad visa and no realistic self-sponsored route. Legal long-stay means an employer, an approved investment, a development organisation or a Lao spouse. If your plan depends on finding a category that lets you support yourself independently, check before you commit — it probably does not exist.
Keep your feet down and your voice low
Good to knowLao social norms run quieter than Thailand's, let alone the West's. Raising your voice or showing visible anger loses you the argument permanently. Don't touch heads, don't point your feet at people or Buddha images, and return the nop (palms together) rather than initiating it with someone junior to you.

Where to go in Vientiane
Pha That Luang
Landmark · That Luang, northeast Vientiane
The gilded national stupa, on the flag and on the money — Laos's most important religious monument and its central symbol.
Local tip: Come at the end of the afternoon when the gold catches the low sun, and walk the surrounding temple compounds, which almost everyone skips.
COPE Visitor Centre
Culture · Near the National Rehabilitation Centre, Khouvieng Road
A small, unflinching museum about unexploded ordnance and the prosthetics programme that treats its survivors.
Local tip: Free, an hour, and the most important thing in Vientiane. Go in your first fortnight — it explains more about the country than any temple will.
Talat Thong Khan Kham

The city's big working morning market — produce, fish, herbs, textiles and the food stalls the neighbourhood actually eats at.
Local tip: Go before 9am. It is a fraction of supermarket prices, and the khao piak sen noodle stalls at the edges are the best cheap breakfast in town.
Mekong riverfront & Chao Anouvong Park

A long riverside promenade with an evening night market, outdoor aerobics classes and Thailand visible on the far bank.
Local tip: The free open-air aerobics sessions at dusk are a genuine Vientiane institution and nobody minds you joining in badly.
Nam Phou & the French quarter

The colonial-era core of shuttered villas, bakeries and small bars around the Nam Phou fountain — where most of the city's expatriate social life happens.
Local tip: Everything worth walking to in Vientiane is within fifteen minutes of here, which is the whole argument for paying central rents.
Wat Sok Pa Luang
Hidden gemCulture · Sisattanak, south of the centre
A forest temple in a wooded compound offering traditional herbal steam saunas and open meditation sessions.
Local tip: The herbal sauna runs most afternoons for a couple of dollars, with tea and a massage afterwards. Locals go weekly; almost no visitor ever finds it.
