Before you start
- PESEL number
- ZUS registration through an employer, or voluntary insurance
- Proof of insurance for the residence permit application
Step-by-step
- 1
Confirm your contract enrols you
An employment contract triggers automatic NFZ coverage. Civil-law contracts and B2B arrangements may leave you to insure yourself voluntarily — check before signing.

Register with a primary care clinic
Choose a przychodnia and submit a declaration form naming your GP. You can change practices a limited number of times per year for free.

Use your employer's private package
Medicover, LuxMed and Enel-Med packages are standard corporate benefits in Warsaw and bypass most public waiting lists for specialists.

Arrange voluntary NFZ insurance if you're not covered
If your contract type doesn't enrol you, you can pay into NFZ voluntarily. This also satisfies the health-insurance requirement for your residence permit.

Know the emergency route
112 for emergencies, and SOR hospital emergency departments for serious cases. Night and holiday primary care operates separately from daytime clinics.

Things most newcomers don’t know
Your contract type, not your visa, decides your healthcare.
Two offers with identical gross pay can differ entirely: umowa o pracę enrols you in NFZ automatically, while a B2B contract can leave you uninsured until you arrange it yourself. This also affects your residence permit, which requires proof of insurance.

Private cover is a normal benefit here, not a luxury.
Warsaw's corporate employers almost all provide LuxMed or Medicover packages. If an offer omits it, that is a genuine gap worth negotiating rather than an unusual ask.

Public specialist waiting lists are the weak point.
Primary and emergency care are solid; the queue for a public specialist appointment can be very long. This is precisely the gap private packages exist to fill, which is why they are so widespread.

The EHIC does not substitute for enrolment.
EU newcomers sometimes rely on a European Health Insurance Card from their home country. It covers necessary treatment temporarily, not residence, and won't satisfy the permit requirement once you're living and working here.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Signing a B2B contract without arranging your own health insurance.
- Assuming an EHIC is sufficient once you're resident.
- Not registering with a specific przychodnia and turning up expecting care.
- Letting coverage lapse between jobs.
