Wiesbadenruns on a handful of strong industries. If you’re job-hunting or weighing a move, here’s where the opportunities (and the big-name employers) are.
Top industries & employers
State government
Hessischer Landtag, Hessische Staatskanzlei, the state ministries, Regierungspräsidium Darmstadt outposts
Wiesbaden is Hesse's capital, so the parliament, the state chancellery and the ministries are here — a large, stable, German-language employment block that has almost nothing to do with the banking economy thirty minutes away.
Federal agencies
Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis), Bundeskriminalamt
Germany's federal statistical office is headquartered in Wiesbaden and the federal criminal police has its principal site here, which makes the city an unexpectedly serious place for statisticians, data engineers and forensic specialists.
Insurance & financial services
R+V Versicherung, SV SparkassenVersicherung, Aareal Bank
Several large insurers and a listed property bank keep their headquarters in Wiesbaden rather than in Frankfurt, which gives the city a finance sector of its own rather than only a commuter share of someone else's.
Chemicals & industrial services
Industriepark Kalle-Albert and InfraServ Wiesbaden, Dyckerhoff, SGL Carbon
The Kalle-Albert site in Biebrich is one of the largest chemical parks in Germany and hosts dozens of independent producers behind one operator; the cement group Dyckerhoff and the carbon materials group SGL are both headquartered in the city.
Wine, drinks and hospitality
Henkell Freixenet, the Rheingau estates, the spa and conference sector
The world's largest sparkling wine group runs from Wiesbaden, the Rheingau begins at the city boundary, and the Kurhaus and its conference business are a real employer rather than a museum piece.
The Frankfurt labour market
Banking, consulting, aviation and logistics employers reachable on the S-Bahn
Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof is around half an hour away and the airport rather less, which means a very large share of Wiesbaden's residents work in a different city entirely — and the city's housing market is priced accordingly.
