What you need

Employment contract with an employer registered with the LMRA
Available quota under the employer's LMRA allocation — Bahrainisation ratios cap how many expatriates a firm may hold
Passport valid well beyond six months
Medical examination at a government health centre after arrival
Biometrics and CPR (Central Population Registry) card registration

How long it lasts: Work permits are commonly issued for two years and renewed with the job; the residence permit is matched to the permit.
Path to permanent residence: None by time served. The realistic upgrade is Golden Residency, which for an employee requires five continuous years of residence and an average basic salary of at least BD 2,000 a month across that period.
Cost: Employer-borne. LMRA charges the employer both an issuance fee and a recurring monthly levy per expatriate worker; your own costs are the medical, the CPR card and any document attestation.
Processing time: Typically a few weeks once the employer's application is lodged, plus the post-arrival medical and CPR steps.

Worth knowing

The Flexible Work Permit — Bahrain's self-sponsored 'flexi permit', which let a worker be in the country without an employer — was discontinued to new applicants by the LMRA in October 2022. It is still widely described online as though it were open. It is not, and there is no like-for-like replacement.
The work permit and the residence permit come from two different authorities. A permit cancelled by the employer at LMRA does not automatically tell you your NPRA residence has lapsed; check both.
Bahrain has no digital nomad or remote-work visa. Working remotely for a foreign employer while on a visit visa is not a residence route.

Golden Residency (self-sponsored, indefinite)

What you need

One of four qualifying categories, per NPRA: a resident employee with at least five continuous years in Bahrain and an average basic salary of no less than BD 2,000 a month; a property owner whose personal share of Bahraini real estate is worth at least BD 130,000; a non-resident retiree with a pension or basic salary of at least BD 4,000 a month; or a retiree who worked in Bahrain 15+ years with a pension of at least BD 2,000
A resident retiree route also exists for people with 15 or more years of prior Bahraini employment
Talented individuals may be nominated by a government body — academics, athletes, entrepreneurs, inventors and artists
Valid health insurance in force when the permit issues

How long it lasts: Issued as an indefinite (permanent) residence, with a BD 300 administrative renewal every ten years.
Path to permanent residence: This is the permanent status. Bahraini citizenship is a separate and highly discretionary matter and does not follow from it.
Cost: BD 5 non-refundable application fee per person and BD 300 issuance per person, then BD 300 every ten years.
Processing time: Weeks; NPRA processes applications through its own portal.

Worth knowing

The property threshold was reduced to BD 130,000 from the BD 200,000 figure the programme launched with. Older guides — and a lot of current marketing — still quote the higher number.
The salary route is measured on average basic salary over five years, not on your current package. Allowances do not count toward it, which catches people whose Gulf package is heavily allowance-weighted.
Golden Residency lets you work, run a business and sponsor family without an employer sponsor. That is the substantive benefit; the ten-year label is not the point.

Path to permanent residence: Not permanent in itself, but it is genuinely self-held. If the property later reaches BD 130,000 in value, the Golden Residency route opens.
Cost: BD 5 application, then BD 200 for two years, BD 400 for five or BD 600 for ten. Transferring the visa costs BD 250.
Processing time: NPRA states 40 working days. Payment must be made within 30 days of approval or the application is cancelled automatically.

Worth knowing

Foreigners may only own freehold property in designated areas of Bahrain. Confirm the plot's status before buying with residence in mind — not every property qualifies you for anything.
The BD 500 monthly income test is separate from the property and is checked against bank statements.
The 30-day payment window after approval is a real deadline and a common way applications die.

Worth knowing

The BD 100,000 test is on your share of the company, not on its total capital. Two co-founders splitting a BD 100,000 company do not both qualify.
Bahrain permits 100% foreign ownership in most sectors, which is why this route exists at all — but the licensing category still governs what the company may actually do.

Evidence of accommodation and health cover for each dependant

How long it lasts: Matched to the sponsor's permit and renewed with it.
Path to permanent residence: None on its own. Dependants of a Golden Residency holder can be endorsed onto that status instead.
Cost: Per-dependant application and residence permit fees, plus attestation costs incurred abroad.
Processing time: Weeks after your own permit is issued.

Worth knowing

Attestation of marriage and birth certificates in your home country is the usual bottleneck. Start it before you leave.
Dependants' status ends with the sponsor's. Losing a job puts the whole household on the clock, not just you.
