Getting set up in Ethiopia
Work permit, work visa and the ICS residence permit
Three instruments in sequence: the Ministry of Labour and Skills issues the work permit, the work visa follows, and the Immigration and Citizenship Service issues the residence permit once you are in the country. You cannot enter Ethiopia to look for work β the employer relationship exists before any of this starts. The slow step is almost always credential authentication.

The window for driving on a foreign or international permit after arrival is short.

What to know before you go
Ethiopia keeps a different calendar and a different clock
CriticalThe Ethiopian calendar has thirteen months and runs roughly seven to eight years behind the Gregorian one, and the Ethiopian clock starts counting at dawn β so what a local calls three o'clock is nine in the morning to you. Both are in everyday use alongside the international versions. When someone gives you a time or a date, ask which system it is in. Getting this wrong once will make you six hours late for something that matters.
Altitude is a real adjustment, not a talking point
CriticalAddis sits at around 2,355 metres, making it one of the highest capital cities in the world. Expect breathlessness on stairs, poor sleep and unusual fatigue for the first one to three weeks, and alcohol hitting harder than it should. Take the first fortnight gently, drink more water than feels necessary, and do not schedule anything strenuous in week one. Anyone with a cardiac or respiratory condition should take medical advice before moving.
The birr was floated in July 2024 and older money advice is wrong
CriticalThe National Bank moved to a market-determined exchange rate in July 2024 after decades of tight control. The birr depreciated sharply, the gap with the parallel market narrowed dramatically, and the rules on holding and using foreign currency were relaxed. Anything written before that β about the black market, about how impossible it is to get dollars, about the official rate being fiction β describes a system that no longer operates the same way. Get current advice, and use formal channels.
Plan remote work around the possibility of disruption
ImportantEthiopia has one of the most documented records of internet and mobile-data disruption in Africa, both nationwide and regionally, and it is a factual planning constraint rather than a political statement. If your income depends on connectivity, hold a second network, keep an offline working pattern you can fall back on, and be honest with clients that a multi-day outage is a possibility. Most weeks it is not an issue; the point is not to be surprised.
Wednesdays and Fridays are fasting days, and the food is excellent
Good to knowEthiopian Orthodox fasting means no animal products on Wednesdays and Fridays and through longer fasting seasons, so restaurants serve bayenetu β a vegan platter β as standard. This makes Addis one of the easiest cities anywhere to eat vegan in, and it also means a business lunch on a Wednesday will be meat-free unless you ask otherwise.
The centre of the city is being rebuilt around you
ImportantLarge-scale corridor redevelopment has been reshaping central Addis, with demolition, road realignment and new construction on a scale that changes routes and landmarks month to month. Navigation apps lag reality, businesses relocate, and 'it's next to the old X' stops being useful. Ask for current directions rather than trusting a map, and check a place still exists before travelling to it.

National Museum of Ethiopia

Home to Dinkinesh β the hominid fossil the world calls Lucy β alongside Ethiopia's national archaeological and royal collections.
Local tip: The Lucy display is a cast; ask about the context rather than just looking at the case. The upper floors of royal and ethnographic material are quieter and arguably more interesting.
Merkato
Neighborhood Β· West of the centre
Reputedly the largest open-air market in Africa, organised into sections by trade β spices, recycled metal, textiles, coffee.
Local tip: Go with someone who knows it and go for something specific. The recycled-materials section, where oil drums become stoves, is the part visitors never see and the part worth seeing.
Entoto Park & the Entoto ridge
Nature Β· North of the city, above 3,000 m
The eucalyptus-covered mountain the city was founded on, now a large public park with trails, viewpoints and Menelik's original church and palace.
Local tip: It is 700 metres above an already high city β do not go in your first fortnight. Sunday morning is when Addis walks and runs here, and it is the best view over the whole basin.
Ethnological Museum, Addis Ababa University
Hidden gemCulture Β· Sidist Kilo
Ethiopia's cultures presented through the life cycle, housed in Haile Selassie's former palace with his bedroom and bathroom preserved as they were.
Local tip: Barely visited and one of the best museums on the continent. The palace rooms at the end land hardest, and the icon and cross collection upstairs is remarkable.
Holy Trinity Cathedral
Landmark Β· Arat Kilo
The principal cathedral of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and the burial place of Haile Selassie.
Local tip: Go on a Sunday morning to see it in use rather than as a monument. Dress modestly, remove shoes where indicated, and stand at the back to watch rather than moving through.
Tomoca and the macchiato culture
Food Β· Piazza and across the city
Ethiopia grows the coffee and drinks it seriously β and the Italian occupation left behind a macchiato habit that persists in every neighbourhood.
Local tip: A macchiato costs less than almost anywhere on earth and is drunk standing up in the middle of the morning. It is also the easiest social opening you will find in this city.
