Work out your residency position
Presence of 183 days or more in a twelve-month period is the principal test. A resident is taxed on worldwide income, not only Ethiopian-source income.

AU, UNECA and mission staff frequently sit under distinct arrangements. Get the specific position for your contract in writing rather than relying on what a colleague on a different contract told you.

Things most newcomers donβt know
Your tax position depends on your contract type more than on your nationality.
Addis's professional market is split between ordinary Ethiopian employment, international organisations under host-country agreements, and diplomatic postings β and the tax treatment differs materially across the three. Advice from a colleague in a different category is not advice about your situation. Get your own contract's position in writing at offer stage.

Ethiopian residency reaches worldwide income, and 183 days runs on a rolling year.
The test is presence over a twelve-month period rather than a calendar year, so a mid-year arrival can make you resident before your first Ethiopian New Year. Once resident, retained foreign consultancy, rental income at home and investment income are in scope. Withholding on the local salary does not close the question.

The float changed what your salary is worth in a way tax figures do not capture.
Since the 2024 move to a market-determined rate the birr has depreciated substantially. A salary agreed in birr and unchanged in nominal terms is a different salary in real and in hard-currency terms than it was. When negotiating or renewing, discuss the mechanism β how and when the figure is reviewed β rather than accepting a number that will date.

Ethiopia does not generally permit dual citizenship, which shapes the long game.
Naturalisation would mean giving up your existing nationality, which makes the Ethiopian Origin ID β most of the rights of a national, no work permit, existing passport intact β a far better destination for anyone who qualifies. It is worth knowing this before you spend a decade accumulating residence toward a status you may not want.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a colleague's international-organisation tax treatment applies to your ordinary employment contract.
- Counting 183 days against a calendar year rather than a rolling twelve months.
- Agreeing a birr salary with no review mechanism in a floating-currency environment.
- Assuming local withholding settles foreign consultancy or rental income.
- Planning toward naturalisation without knowing it would cost your existing nationality.
