Before you start
- Passport valid well beyond the intended stay
- For Neo Nomad: six months of bank statements showing USD 3,000+/month from foreign sources
- Criminal-record certificate and medical insurance for the nomad routes
- An IIN, obtained in person once you arrive
Step-by-step

Check whether you even need a visa for the first 30 days
Roughly 56 countries — the US, UK, Canada, Australia, the EU, and since July 2025 also Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Qatar and the UAE — enter visa-free for up to 30 days per visit, subject to a 90-days-in-180 cap. That cap is the thing people miss: two 30-day trips plus a third in the same window puts you over. Verify your nationality on the eGov visa classification page rather than a blog, because the list has been revised repeatedly since 2024.

Apply for the Neo Nomad visa (B12-1) if you work remotely for foreign clients
Lodged at a Kazakh consular post: six months of bank statements evidencing at least USD 3,000/month from outside Kazakhstan, a home-country tax return, a criminal-record certificate and medical insurance. Multiple entry, valid up to a year, and extendable inside the country by the territorial police for up to a further year. Nationals of around 48 countries Kazakhstan treats as economically developed and migration-stable are exempt from the invitation requirement. Fee around EUR 45; decision in about five to seven business days.

Get your IIN at a Public Service Centre in the first week
The Individual Identification Number is issued only in person since February 2024, at a Public Service Centre (ЦОН). Take your passport and a notarised Kazakh or Russian translation of it. The IIN is the key to the bank account, the SIM, the lease and payroll — every downstream errand in this city assumes you already have it. Almaty has several centres; the ones away from the central districts move faster.

Or go the employer route — work permit inside the quota, then residence
An Almaty employer must advertise the role on the Electronic Labour Exchange for 15 calendar days in this region before it can even apply, then obtain a permit against the national quota (0.25% of the labour force for 2026, with published sub-allocations by category). Local-staffing ratios apply: 70% Kazakh citizens for the two managerial categories, 90% for specialists and skilled workers, with an exemption for employers under 20 staff. Company founders, directors, kandas returnees and EAEU citizens sit outside the quota entirely.

Things most newcomers don’t know
Kazakhstan's Neo Nomad visa is genuinely in force and being issued — unlike several regional 'nomad visas' that exist only in press releases.
This region is full of announced-but-not-enacted schemes; Azerbaijan's digital nomad visa, for example, appears only in a 2026-2028 action plan. Kazakhstan's B12-1 sits in the published eGov visa classification with defined evidence requirements and a consular fee, which is what a real instrument looks like. Confirm the category code with the mission before you file.

There are TWO Kazakh remote-work visas and only one of them leads anywhere permanent.
The Neo Nomad visa (B12-1) sits in the visitor series and builds nothing toward residence. The separate B9/B9-1 digital nomad visa for in-demand professions, applied for through Astana Hub, was designed with a permanent-residence pathway attached. People apply for the wrong one because both are described as 'the Kazakhstan digital nomad visa' and then find after a year that they have accumulated no qualifying residence.

Neither nomad visa lets you earn Kazakh-source income, and that restriction is enforced through banking rather than immigration.
Both are built around income earned outside Kazakhstan. Taking local clients or a local salary is outside their terms. Because payments flow through Kaspi and the domestic banking rails, local income is visible in a way it would not be in a cash economy — so the practical exposure is higher than people assume.
The IIN is the real bottleneck, not the visa, and it can only be obtained inside the country in person.
Since February 2024 the remote and consular routes to an IIN closed. That means the sequence is fixed: arrive, get the IIN, get a SIM, then open a bank account, then sign a lease. Anyone planning to land on a Friday and sign a lease on Monday has the order wrong, and landlords who want a registered contract will not proceed without it.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Reading the 30-day visa-free stay as renewable indefinitely by leaving — the 90-days-in-180 cap catches frequent returners
- Applying for the Neo Nomad visa when the B9/B9-1 in-demand-profession visa is the one with a permanent-residence pathway
- Assuming the AIFC tax exemption applies because you are in Kazakhstan — it attaches to AIFC participants in Astana, not to the country
- Arriving without a notarised translation of your passport and losing a day at the Public Service Centre
- Planning around the pre-2026 flat 10% income tax, which the new Tax Code replaced on 1 January 2026
