Status, Social Security number and Massachusetts ID
There is no post-arrival registration in the US: your I-94 record is your status. In the first weeks you need a Social Security number if work-authorised, or an ITIN if not, since payroll, banking and credit all key off one of them. Massachusetts adds a deadline no other state in this set has: the individual health-insurance mandate applies to people who become residents within 63 days, so health cover is a first-month task here rather than a first-quarter one.

Massachusetts converts foreign licences without a written or road test only from Canada, Mexico and US territories. Everyone else applies as a new driver: learner's permit exam, then a road test. If you are from a country with an arrangement, you need a certified driving record no more than 30 days old and an eye test. An International Driving Permit cannot be converted at all. Given how walkable Boston is, the first question is whether you need to do this.

Nobody with an employer plan needs to worry — but if you arrive without one, the clock starts immediately.
Your foreign licence probably cannot be converted here
CriticalMassachusetts converts licences without a written or road test only from Canada, Mexico and US territories. A German, Japanese, Australian or Indian licence gets you nothing — you take the learner's permit exam and a road test as a new driver. This is the narrowest arrangement of any state in this set. Texas waives exams for five countries and Florida requires only a vision test; Massachusetts does neither, and an International Driving Permit cannot be converted either.
Almost every lease in this city starts on 1 September
CriticalBoston's rental market is structured around the university calendar, and the overwhelming majority of leases run 1 September to 31 August. The consequence is 'Allston Christmas' — the entire city moving on the same day, with no moving trucks available and furniture abandoned on every pavement. If you arrive off-cycle you'll have far less choice; if you arrive on-cycle, book movers months ahead.
Broker fees are still normal here, unlike New York

A fee of one month's rent, paid by the tenant, remains standard in Boston, on top of first month, last month and a security deposit. You may genuinely not need a car
ImportantBoston is small, dense and walkable by American standards, and the T covers most of what you need. Car ownership brings resident parking permits, street-cleaning rules and, above all, snow: after a declared snow emergency the city bans parking on major routes and tows aggressively. Many people here deliberately go without.

Where to go in Boston
The Freedom Trail
Landmark · Downtown to Charlestown
A 2.5-mile red brick line through sixteen sites of the American Revolution, from Boston Common to Bunker Hill.
Local tip: Walk it in reverse from Charlestown to avoid the tour groups. The Granary Burying Ground and the Old North Church are the two worth slowing down for; much of the rest is walk-past.
The Emerald Necklace
Nature · Back Bay to Franklin Park
Olmsted's seven-mile chain of connected parks running from Boston Common through the Fens and Jamaica Pond to Franklin Park.
Local tip: Almost nobody walks the whole thing, and it is the best way to understand the city's shape. The Arnold Arboretum section is the most beautiful, and free.
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
Culture · Fenway
A Venetian palazzo built around a courtyard garden, with the empty frames still hanging from the unsolved 1990 theft.
Local tip: Anyone named Isabella gets in free for life. So does anyone wearing Red Sox gear on the day after a game — the museum genuinely does this.
Harvard Square & Cambridge
Neighborhood · Cambridge, across the river
Bookshops, street musicians and the oldest university in the country, a few stops on the Red Line from downtown.
Local tip: Harvard Square is heavily visited; Central and Inman Squares are where people actually go. The Harvard Art Museums are free to Massachusetts residents.
The Boston Harbor Islands
Nature · Ferry from Long Wharf
Thirty-four islands in the harbour with a Civil War fort, camping, and beaches, most of them nearly empty.
Local tip: Georges Island for the fort, Spectacle for the walking and views. A summer ferry ride from downtown; almost no visitors know they exist.
Mount Auburn Cemetery
Hidden gemNature · Cambridge/Watertown
America's first garden cemetery, from 1831, and one of the best birdwatching sites in the north-east during spring migration.
Local tip: Climb the Washington Tower for a full view of Boston most residents have never seen. In early May the warbler migration brings serious birders here at dawn — 175 acres of arboretum that happens to contain graves.
