Panjab University traces to Lahore in 1882 and moved here after Partition; IISER and NIPER at Mohali are national institutes. The result is an unusually dense research population for the region.

The Baddi industrial belt in Himachal Pradesh, roughly an hour from the city, is one of Asia's largest pharmaceutical manufacturing concentrations, and a lot of its management lives in the tricity.
