Status, Social Security number and a North Carolina licence in 60 days
There is no post-arrival registration in the US: your I-94 record is your status. In the first weeks you need a Social Security number if work-authorised, or an ITIN if not. North Carolina expects a driver licence and vehicle registration within 60 days of establishing residency — twice the window most states give — and requires documentation of legal presence for a licence. The practical constraint is not the deadline but the queue: NCDMV appointments in Mecklenburg County are booked out a long way, they are released on a rolling basis, and offices in the surrounding counties are frequently much quicker. Book on day one even if you are not ready to go, and take the appointment you can get rather than the one nearest to you.

North Carolina expects the licence and the vehicle registration transferred within 60 days. Two things are distinctive. First, the inspection: an annual safety inspection is required statewide and an emissions inspection additionally in a group of counties that includes Mecklenburg, and it must be passed before the registration will issue. Second, Tag & Tax Together: the county's vehicle property tax is collected in the same transaction as the state registration renewal, so you get one notice a year covering both. That is genuinely simpler than Missouri's separate assessment, and it also means the bill is larger than a newcomer expects when they see 'registration renewal' on the envelope.

Coverage comes from an employer, from HealthCare.gov, or from NC Medicaid if your income qualifies. North Carolina expanded Medicaid in December 2023, closing the coverage gap that had persisted here for a decade — a meaningful and recent change that a lot of older advice still gets wrong. There is no state exchange, so the federal marketplace deadline is the only deadline. Locally, care is a two-system picture: Advocate Health, headquartered in Charlotte and operating here as Atrium Health, and Novant Health. Plan networks are drawn along that line and the two systems' hospitals sit next to each other across the metro, so choosing a plan is really choosing a system.

This is one of the simplest tax situations of any large American city, and it is getting cheaper on income and more expensive at the till. North Carolina's individual income tax is a single flat rate on a legislated declining path: 4.75% for 2023, 4.50% for 2024, 4.25% for 2025 and 3.99% for tax years beginning in 2026, with further reductions from 2027 contingent on revenue triggers set out in Session Law 2023-134. No municipality or county may add to it, so there is one state return and no local filing — nothing like Columbus's work-city arithmetic or Kansas City's earnings tax. The offsetting move is on consumption: Mecklenburg County levied an additional 1% local sales and use tax effective 1 July 2026, on top of North Carolina's 4.75% state rate and the county's existing local and transit components. Vehicles are taxed as property and collected with the registration under Tag & Tax Together.

What to know before you go
North Carolina's income tax is flat, falling, and the only one you pay
CriticalThe rate was 4.25% for 2025 and drops to 3.99% for 2026, with further reductions from 2027 contingent on revenue triggers written into Session Law 2023-134. More importantly, no city or county in North Carolina may levy an income tax at all — so unlike Columbus, Detroit, Baltimore or Kansas City there is no municipal layer, no work-city arithmetic and no second return. One flat state rate on top of federal is the whole picture, which makes this one of the simplest tax situations of any large US city.
Mecklenburg's sales tax went up by a full point on 1 July 2026
ImportantVoters approved a one-cent local sales tax in November 2025 to fund a transit and roads programme, and the North Carolina Department of Revenue's rate schedule records Mecklenburg County levying the additional 1% effective 1 July 2026. Any cost-of-living comparison written before that date understates what you will pay at the till here. The money is earmarked for rail expansion, bus service and roads, none of which will change your commute for years — so budget the tax now and treat the transit as a reason to watch the city.
Your car is taxed, and it arrives with the registration renewal
CriticalNorth Carolina taxes vehicles as property, and under the Tag & Tax Together system the county's vehicle property tax is collected in the same transaction as the state registration renewal. One notice, one payment, once a year. The amount depends on the vehicle's assessed value and on Mecklenburg County's rate, so an expensive car is expensive to keep here. Newcomers from countries with no annual vehicle tax should budget for it; newcomers from Missouri will find the single combined bill a relief.
New residents get 60 days, and the vehicle needs an inspection before it can be registered
CriticalNorth Carolina expects new residents to obtain a state driver licence and register their vehicle within 60 days of establishing residency — a longer window than Missouri's or Louisiana's 30 days, but not a generous one. North Carolina also requires an annual safety inspection statewide, plus an emissions inspection in a subset of counties that includes Mecklenburg, and the inspection has to be passed before the registration will issue. Apply for your Social Security number about ten days after arriving

One county, one school district — and that makes the housing search much simpler than it looks
Good to knowCharlotte-Mecklenburg Schools covers the entire county: the city, the six towns and the unincorporated land. There is no jigsaw of districts to decode, which is a genuine relief after Columbus or Kansas City. What there is instead is a magnet and choice lottery layered on top of home schools, so the address gives you a default assignment and the application gives you options beyond it. Look up the home school for the exact address, then look at what you could apply for.

Charlotte is the second-largest banking centre in the United States by assets and the only city outside New York that headquarters one of the big four banks. Bank of America and Truist are both based Uptown, and Wells Fargo runs one of its two main operational centres here. It is the reason the city grew and it remains the deepest professional job market in the Carolinas.

Duke Energy is headquartered Uptown and Honeywell moved its global headquarters here in 2019. The metro markets itself as an energy hub, and Siemens Energy's gas turbine plant on Westinghouse Boulevard is one of the largest advanced manufacturing sites in the region.

Advocate Health, Atrium Health, Novant Health, Levine Children's Hospital, Carolinas Medical Center
Advocate Health, formed by the 2022 merger of Atrium Health and Advocate Aurora, is headquartered in Charlotte and is one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the country. Atrium and Novant between them define both the employment market and, critically, the insurance network map — pick a plan by system.

American Airlines' Charlotte Douglas hub, Charlotte Douglas International Airport, the Norfolk Southern intermodal terminal, the Charlotte inland port
Charlotte Douglas is one of the busiest airports in the world by aircraft movements and American Airlines' second-largest hub, which makes the airport and its supply chain one of the region's biggest employers — and makes Charlotte unusually well connected for a metro this size, including direct transatlantic service.

Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing, Roush Fenway Keselowski, Richard Childress Racing, Charlotte Motor Speedway, the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Penske
Almost every NASCAR Cup Series team is based in the Charlotte metro, concentrated around Concord and Mooresville. It is a genuine advanced-engineering cluster — composites, aerodynamics, data — that hires mechanical engineers and machinists, and it is invisible to anyone who does not follow the sport.
Technology & professional services
Lowe's technology hubs, Honeywell's software organisation, LendingTree, AvidXchange, Red Ventures in Fort Mill, Ernst & Young, Deloitte and the big four's regional practices
Charlotte's tech sector is mostly attached to something else — fintech behind the banks, supply-chain software behind the retailers, energy software behind Duke. That makes it steadier and less venture-driven than Austin or Denver, and the senior roles skew toward enterprise rather than product.
Where to go in Charlotte
South End & the Rail Trail
Neighborhood · Immediately south-west of Uptown, along the Blue Line
A converted textile-mill district rebuilt around the light rail into the densest, youngest and most walkable part of Charlotte, with a paved trail running the length of it past breweries, patios and public art.
Local tip: The Rail Trail is the neighbourhood's actual high street — walk it on a Saturday rather than driving between destinations. Get off the Blue Line at East/West Boulevard for the older end and Bland Street for the newest development.
NoDa
Nightlife · North Davidson Street, north-east of Uptown
The old North Charlotte mill village turned arts district — galleries, murals, music venues and the city's original brewery cluster, on the Blue Line's northern half.
Local tip: Gallery Crawl on the first Friday of the month is free and the easiest evening in the city to meet people. The Neighborhood Theatre and the Evening Muse are where touring bands actually play; go on a weeknight when it is locals rather than a bar crawl.
Freedom Park, Dilworth & Myers Park
Nature · South of Uptown
Charlotte's central park and the two oldest streetcar suburbs around it, where Queens Road West's willow oaks form a tunnel that is the single most photographed thing in the city.
Local tip: Drive or cycle Queens Road West once in autumn, then walk Freedom Park's loop. The Little Sugar Creek Greenway connects the park all the way into Uptown off-road and is the best route in for anyone on a bike.
The U.S. National Whitewater Center
Nature · West of the city off the Catawba River
The world's largest man-made whitewater river, built as an Olympic training site, surrounded by 1,300 acres of trails, climbing, zip lines and a flat-water lake — with live music all summer.
Local tip: Parking is charged and entry to the grounds and trails is otherwise free; you only pay for the activities. The summer River Jam concert series on Wednesday and Thursday evenings is the cheapest good night out in the metro.
Camp North End
Hidden gemCulture · North of Uptown, off Statesville Avenue
A 76-acre adaptive reuse of a Ford Model T assembly plant that later built Nike missiles — now studios, independent food, breweries, murals and a public plaza in raw industrial buildings.
Local tip: Go on a weekend afternoon when the food halls and makers are open. It is the most interesting architecture in Charlotte and the one place that looks like the city's industrial history rather than its banking present.
Uptown and the Four Wards
Landmark · The city centre, inside the 277 loop
The banking skyline around Trade and Tryon, with the Levine Center for the Arts, the Mint Museum, Romare Bearden Park, the NASCAR Hall of Fame and the Harvey B. Gantt Center all within a few blocks.
Local tip: The Gantt Center for African-American Arts and Culture is the one most visitors miss and the one most worth an afternoon. Fourth Ward's Victorian streets, two blocks from the towers, are the only surviving nineteenth-century residential fabric in the centre.
