Work out what the Blue Line does for your commute
The LYNX Blue Line runs from UNC Charlotte through Uptown to Pineville, and the corridor around it — South End, NoDa, Uptown — is the only genuinely car-optional part of the metro. Things most newcomers don’t know

North Carolina collects the county vehicle property tax with the state registration renewal in a single transaction. It is administratively elegant and it surprises newcomers who budgeted for a registration fee and received a bill scaled to their car's value. Model it as an annual cost of ownership when you choose the car, not when the notice arrives.

Mecklenburg is an emissions county, and the inspection gates the registration.

North Carolina requires an annual safety inspection everywhere and adds emissions testing in a subset of counties including Mecklenburg. The result is recorded electronically and the registration will not issue without it — so the order of operations is inspect, insure, then register. Confirm the current county list and fees with the NCDMV.

Sixty days is one of the longer windows in this app, and Mecklenburg's booking calendar routinely consumes it. Offices in the ring of surrounding counties are the standard local workaround and are a genuinely short drive. Anyone who tells you to just walk in has not tried recently.
