Before you start
- A valid visa or other admission category
- An electronic I-94 record from the CBP website
- Work authorisation from DHS for a Social Security number
- A Colorado address for the DMV and most account applications
- For defence-sector roles: written confirmation from the employer of whether a clearance is required
Step-by-step
- 1
Download your I-94 in the first few days
It records your admission class and 'admit until' date, and it is what employers, the DMV and the SSA will ask for. Retrieved electronically from the CBP website — the visa sticker in your passport is not this.

Wait about ten days, then apply for a Social Security number
SSA verifies your status against DHS systems that lag entry by one to two weeks, so an immediate visit usually wastes the trip. File Form SS-5 in person with your passport, visa and I-94. There is no fee.

If you cannot get an SSN, file for an ITIN
IRS Form W-7 produces an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for tax filing, and many banks accept it. It grants no right to work.

Book a Colorado driver licence appointment in week one
Every applicant must make an appointment at a state driver licence office — there is no walk-in route. You have 30 days from becoming a Colorado resident, and you become one as soon as you are employed here, so the deadline starts sooner than most people assume.

Ask for a REAL ID, and know what it is not
Since 7 May 2025 a standard state credential cannot be used at an airport security checkpoint. Colorado also issues a document under the Colorado Road and Community Safety Act to residents who cannot document lawful status; that document is not REAL ID. A passport works either way.

Settle the clearance question before you commit
If your offer is with a defence prime, a space contractor or an installation support firm, ask explicitly: does this role require access to classified information? A clearance requires US citizenship in all but the narrow Limited Access Authorization case, and discovering that after relocating is the single most expensive mistake a foreign national makes in this city.

Things most newcomers don’t know
A security clearance is a US-citizenship requirement in practice, and this is a clearance town.
32 CFR 117.10(k) tells contractors to make every effort to ensure non-US citizens are not employed in duties requiring access to classified information. The exception — a Limited Access Authorization — exists only where a non-citizen has unique or unusual skills urgently needed for a specific contract and no clearable US citizen is available, and it is never valid for TOP SECRET, restricted data, intelligence, COMSEC or NATO information. Colorado Springs has five installations and a contractor economy built on top of them, so this is not an edge case here — it is the shape of the job market.

You become a Colorado resident the day you start work, not after 90 days.
The DMV's residency test is disjunctive: you are a resident if you own or operate a business in Colorado, OR are employed in Colorado, OR have lived here 90 consecutive days. People read the 90-day limb and assume they have three months before the 30-day licence clock starts. If you arrived with a job, it started on day one.

There are no walk-in visits at a Colorado driver licence office.
Every applicant must book. This is unlike most states, where queuing is unpleasant but possible, and it converts the 30-day deadline into a booking deadline. Vehicle registration is different — that is the county Clerk & Recorder, a separate office with separate rules.

The visa sticker's expiry is not your permission to stay.
A visa authorises travel to a port of entry; the officer there decides how long you may remain and records it on the I-94. Overstaying the I-94 date has consequences the visa expiry does not.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Accepting a defence or space job as a non-citizen without confirming in writing whether it needs a clearance.
- Reading the DMV's 90-day residence limb and assuming the 30-day licence clock has not started.
- Planning to walk into a Colorado driver licence office — appointments are mandatory statewide.
- Arriving without certified English translations of non-English identity documents.
- Visiting a Social Security office before DHS records have synced, and having to go back.
