Before you start
- Residence permit
- TRA TIN
- Proof of Dar es Salaam address
- Employer letter
- Registered Tanzanian SIM
Step-by-step
- 1
Get the residence permit and NIDA number first
Unlike Kenya and Rwanda, you cannot shortcut to mobile money with a passport alone. Tanzanian SIM registration is biometric and tied to a NIDA number, which foreign residents obtain on the basis of a residence permit.

Things most newcomers don’t know
Mobile money is not the day-one shortcut here that it is in Kenya or Rwanda.
Tanzanian SIM registration is biometric and linked to a national identification number, and foreign residents get that number on the strength of a residence permit. So the whole mobile-money layer sits behind immigration rather than beside it. People arriving from Nairobi expect to be paying by phone in week one and are not — plan cash and a card for the first stretch.

Tanzanian mobile money is interoperable across networks, which is genuinely unusual.
You can send from one operator's wallet to another's directly, rather than being locked to whichever network your counterparty uses. Tanzania was an early global mover on this. In practice it means the choice of network matters far less here than choosing Safaricom does in Kenya.

Ask about foreign-currency accounts at opening, not later.
If you are paid partly in dollars or receive funds from abroad, a USD account alongside the shilling one avoids repeated conversion spreads. Tanzanian banks offer these but adding one later means another KYC round, and Tanzanian KYC is not quick.

The TIN unlocks three unrelated things.
Bank account, payroll and — because TRA issues driving licences — your licence conversion. It is free and online. Registering for it in your first week removes a dependency from the middle of three separate processes instead of the start of one.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting to be paying by mobile money in your first week, as you would in Nairobi or Kigali.
- Attempting to open an account before the residence permit is issued.
- Skipping the TIN and stalling the bank, the payroll and the driving licence at once.
- Not asking for a foreign-currency account at opening.
- Arriving at a branch without photocopies of every original.
