Things most newcomers don’t know

The SIM sits behind the residence permit, which is the opposite of Kenya and Rwanda.

Tanzania's biometric SIM registration requires a national identification number, and foreign residents get one on the basis of a residence permit. So the mobile-money layer that makes Nairobi and Kigali feel administratively easy is not available to you on day one here. Budget for cash and international roaming for your first weeks, and start the NIDA application the moment the permit issues.

Network choice matters less in Tanzania because wallets talk to each other.

Tanzania was an early mover on full mobile-money interoperability, so you can send from one operator's wallet to another's directly. There is no Safaricom-style lock-in. Choose the network on coverage where you actually live and travel, not on which wallet your colleagues use.

Biometric capture is required and roadside agents are not always set up to complete a foreigner's registration. Going straight to a Vodacom or Airtel shop with the permit, passport and NIDA number saves a wasted afternoon and a half-registered line that stops working a week later.

Ask which fibre providers reach the building before you sign a lease.

Coverage across Masaki, Oyster Bay, Mikocheni and Upanga is good but building-specific, and a new drop can take weeks. For anyone working remotely this is a more consequential question than the kitchen — and landlords never volunteer it.
