Work out whether you need a car at all
Essen sits on the S-Bahn and Stadtbahn networks, the Ruhrbahn runs the trams and buses, and the whole conurbation is inside the VRR fare zone — which the Deutschlandticket covers nationally anyway. The hills in the south make cycling less obvious than in flat Cologne, but the rail density is unusually high.

Find your country on the exchange list

Get the green badge before you drive anywhere in the Ruhr
The Umweltzone Ruhrgebiet has run as one joined-up zone since 1 January 2012 and has been green-badge-only since 1 July 2014, covering Essen, Bochum, Dortmund, Duisburg, Gelsenkirchen, Mülheim, Oberhausen, Recklinghausen, Castrop-Rauxel, Gladbeck, Herten, Herne and Bottrop. Buy the Plakette at a testing station or garage before your first drive.

Things most newcomers don’t know

The Ruhr's low emission zone is one continuous area, not thirteen separate ones.

Most German cities have a compact centre-only Umweltzone you can plausibly drive around. The Ruhr's has been joined up since 2012 and covers thirteen cities in a single block, so an unbadged car is effectively locked out of the entire conurbation rather than one city centre. It is the single most consequential driving fact here and no rental listing mentions it.

For US, Canadian and Australian licences the answer depends on your state or province.

Germany's exchange arrangements with federal countries are negotiated per state. One US state may exchange with no test while its neighbour requires both theory and practical. Look up your specific issuing jurisdiction rather than your country.

Letting the six months lapse can cost thousands.

The Ruhr is one labour market on one ticket, which is worth more than a car.

Bochum is fifteen minutes away by train, Duisburg twenty, Düsseldorf and Dortmund half an hour, Cologne under an hour — all on regional services the Deutschlandticket already covers for a flat monthly fee. Widening a job search from 'Essen' to 'reachable from Essen' roughly multiplies the openings available to you, and costs nothing extra.

Common mistakes to avoid

Buying an older diesel without checking it can get a green badge.
Assuming your country exchanges freely without checking the state or province-level list.
Letting the six-month window lapse and losing your exchange rights.
Treating the Umweltzone as an Essen problem when it covers the whole Ruhr.
Buying a car at all before testing whether the Deutschlandticket covers your life.
