Work visa, POC, and the errands that mean a trip to Lahore
Pakistan issues a short entry visa and does the substantive work at the extension, where a security clearance sits. Nothing accumulates toward permanent residence. The first question is always whether you have Pakistani ancestry, because NADRA's Pakistan Origin Card confers indefinite stay and the right to work with no visa at all. The Faisalabad-specific point is geographic rather than legal: this is Pakistan's third city but not a provincial capital, so the parts of the process that are done at a Regional Passport Office in a provincial capital mean a trip down the M-3 to Lahore.

Faisalabad had no public transport at all until September 2025, when the province launched an electric bus service — thirty buses on seven routes at a PKR 20 fare. That is real and worth checking against your commute, but it is not yet a network, so a private vehicle is still a much more central question here than in Lahore, Multan or Peshawar. The good news on the licence itself is that Punjab has the best system in the country: DLIMS 2.0 runs application, verification, payment through the ePay PSID system and card tracking entirely online. The catch is the one every Pakistani licensing portal shares — it is built around a CNIC.

The decisive question is resident or non-resident, because the State Bank treats non-resident rupee accounts as a separate regime with different documentation and different repatriation rights. Pakistan operates genuine exchange controls: getting money out later depends on how it came in and which account held it. What Faisalabad adds is depth on the trade side — letters of credit, export documentation and the State Bank's export refinance facilities are ordinary daily business at branches here in a way they are not in Islamabad or Peshawar.

Faisalabad's public teaching hospitals are large and competent — Allied Hospital and the DHQ, both attached to Faisalabad Medical University, plus the Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology — and the private sector around them is adequate rather than outstanding. Lahore is two hours down the M-3 and is where the harder cases go, which makes this one of the easier Pakistani cities to plan health cover for: you are never far from a genuine tertiary centre. Private insurance is the practical answer, and the Punjab health card is not, because it does not cover foreign nationals and is not universal even for Punjabis.

Every Pakistani SIM is biometrically bound to an identity document at the point of sale — a fingerprint matched against NADRA in real time. Foreign nationals register against a passport through NADRA's foreigner verification route and are held to a much lower SIM ceiling than citizens. Mobile data is very cheap. Fixed broadband in Faisalabad is thinner than Lahore's and thinner still once you move toward the industrial belt, which is a real consideration if your work is at one of the estates rather than in the city.

Pakistan's tax year runs 1 July to 30 June and you are a resident individual on 183 days or more of presence within it, taxed on worldwide income. Filer status on the FBR's Active Taxpayers List materially reduces withholding on ordinary transactions and comes from filing on time rather than from registering. The Punjab layer changed shape in 2025: the standard services tax rate is sixteen percent, and the Punjab Finance Act 2025 reorganised the schedules so that services are taxable unless specifically listed as tax-free — the opposite of the old model, and a change most published guidance has not caught up with.

What to know before you go
Register the tenancy. Punjab gives you a Rent Tribunal and it only works if you do
CriticalThe Punjab Rented Premises Act 2009 requires tenancy agreements to be registered and creates dedicated Rent Tribunals presided over by special judges with real execution powers — a materially stronger position than a tenant has in Sindh or Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where disputes go to ordinary courts. The protection follows the registration, and registration is the step landlords most often want to skip. Budget the small stamp and registration cost and treat it as non-negotiable. This is the single most valuable thing on this page and it costs almost nothing.
If you have a Pakistani parent or grandparent, resolve POC before your employer opens a visa file
CriticalNADRA's Pakistan Origin Card is for foreign nationals of Pakistani descent, including foreign spouses, and NADRA's own statement of its effect covers multiple visa-free entry, indefinite stay, exemption from reporting to police or foreigners' registration offices, the right to buy and hold property anywhere in Pakistan, banking rights and eligibility for employment. A POC holder needs no work visa. NICOP is the different document, for people who are still Pakistani citizens. Central Punjab is where a very large share of the British and Gulf Pakistani diaspora comes from, so the proportion of people arriving in Faisalabad who qualify without knowing it is high.
Public transport here is one year old and thirty buses deep — plan as if there isn't any
CriticalUntil September 2025 Pakistan's third-largest city had no public transport whatsoever. The Punjab government then launched an electric bus service: thirty buses on seven major routes at a flat PKR 20 fare, with free travel for senior citizens, women, students and people with disabilities, and a metro bus project announced alongside it. That is a genuine start and worth using if a route happens to fit your commute. It is not yet a network — Lahore has a metro line and two bus corridors, Multan has a full metrobus, Peshawar has bus rapid transit with feeders — so for now getting around is still a car, a motorbike, ride-hailing or a rickshaw. The practical consequence stands: design the commute into the housing decision, because there is no network to compensate later. Anyone working at the industrial estates north of the city should treat the Sahianwala interchange as the fixed point.
Filing on time is what makes you a 'filer' — registering does not
ImportantThe FBR's Active Taxpayers List is the operative document in Pakistani financial life. Non-filers pay materially higher withholding on property purchases, vehicle registration, dividends and certain banking transactions. Obtaining a National Tax Number does not put you on the list; filing a return by the due date does, and a late filer is admitted only after paying a surcharge. The list is rebuilt weekly, so status lapses. In a city where a lot of people buy vehicles and commercial property, the gap between filer and non-filer rates is worth more than any deduction available.
Punjab's services tax changed shape in 2025, and that matters if you invoice anything
ImportantPunjab's standard sales tax on services is sixteen percent, administered by the Punjab Revenue Authority rather than by the FBR. The Punjab Finance Act 2025 reorganised the schedules so that services are taxable unless specifically listed as tax-free — a switch from the old model where only listed services were caught. If you consult, contract or run any service business here, the question is no longer 'is my service on the list' but 'is it on the exemption list', which is a different and generally worse answer. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's standard rate is fifteen percent on a differently structured Act, so an adviser fluent in one province is not automatically useful in the other.
Winter air here is a Punjab problem, not a Lahore one
Good to knowThe provincial government runs a public AQI dashboard covering more than thirty Punjab districts including Faisalabad, with hourly readings, forecasts and health advisories, and it publishes a city ranking that Faisalabad appears in every day. Readings here are usually better than Lahore's and worse than most people expect. Buy HEPA purifiers for the bedrooms and the room you work in during October rather than December, when the price rises and the stock disappears, and get a respiratory plan in place before November if anyone in the household has asthma.

Faisalabad is not a city with a textile sector; it is a textile sector with a city attached. Spinning, weaving, processing, hosiery and garment manufacture all happen within an hour of the clock tower, and Interloop is one of the largest hosiery manufacturers in the world. Buying-house, compliance and sourcing roles are the usual entry point for foreign professionals.
Industrial estates & special economic zones
FIEDMC's M-3 Industrial City and Allama Iqbal Industrial City, Faisalabad Industrial Estate
M-3 covers about 4,485 acres and the adjacent Allama Iqbal Industrial City — a designated priority SEZ under CPEC — about 3,966 more, both reached from the Sahianwala interchange on the M-4. That is roughly 8,400 contiguous acres of industrial land in one place, which is why heavy manufacturing keeps choosing Faisalabad over Lahore.
Agriculture, agri-processing & seed
Fatima Group, Four Brothers, Engro Fertilizers' Punjab operations, local ginning and rice processors
The city was built as the market town of the Lower Chenab canal colony and the surrounding districts are still among the most intensively farmed land in South Asia. Agri-input, seed and food-processing companies cluster here for the same reason the mills did.
Chemicals, dyes & engineering
Sitara Chemical Industries, Nimir Industrial Chemicals, textile machinery importers and fabricators
A dyestuff and chemical cluster grew up to serve the processing mills, and with it a workshop economy that builds and rebuilds textile machinery. It is one of the few genuinely deep light-engineering bases in Pakistan.

University of Agriculture Faisalabad, National Textile University, GC University Faisalabad, Faisalabad Medical University
UAF traces back to 1906 and is one of the oldest and strongest agricultural research institutions in South Asia; the National Textile University is the only one of its kind in the country and feeds the mills directly. Between them they make Faisalabad a genuine research employer rather than only an industrial one.
Trade finance & logistics
Bank export-finance desks, clearing agents, the Faisalabad dry port and the M-4 corridor operators
Export orders are financed and shipped from here rather than from Karachi, so trade finance, documentary credit and freight forwarding are real local specialisms. The motorway network puts Karachi Port, Lahore and Islamabad all within a day's road haul.

Ghanta Ghar & the Eight Bazaars
Landmark · Old city centre
A 1905 clock tower at the exact centre of eight bazaars laid out to radiate from it in a Union Jack — the plan of a British canal-colony town, still functioning as a market.
Local tip: Climb nothing and buy nothing on your first visit; just walk one bazaar out to the ring and back down another. Katchery for cloth, Rail for household goods, Jhang for produce. Go on a weekday morning before the handcarts fill the lanes completely.

Nightlife · Peoples Colony
The commercial block that is where Faisalabad actually goes out — restaurants, dessert shops, clothing, and a car-and-motorbike parade that runs until well past midnight.
Local tip: In a city with no bars this is what a night out means, and Faisalabad does it with more energy than its reputation suggests. Thursday and Friday nights are the peak. Park on the outside and walk in; the internal roads gridlock by nine.
Rail Bazaar & Katchery Bazaar street food

The eating that happens between the cloth shops — nihari, paye, halwa puri in the morning and charred seekh at night.
Local tip: The mornings are the point here rather than the evenings: halwa puri and lassi from the stalls around Katchery Bazaar between seven and nine, when the traders are eating before opening up. Cash only, no menus, and the queue tells you which stall to join.
Jinnah Garden (Company Bagh)

The city's colonial-era public garden — old trees, wide walks, and the main piece of open green in a very built-up city.
Local tip: Early morning is when it works, and it is genuinely busy at six with walkers before the heat arrives. Skip it entirely on the worst smog days in December and January — the provincial AQI dashboard will tell you which those are.
Madina Town & Susan Road
Neighborhood · East Faisalabad
The middle-class residential belt that most incomers end up in — gridded streets, newer housing, and the city's best concentration of everyday services.
Local tip: Susan Road is the spine and where the useful things are: clinics, banks, supermarkets, the better cafés. Living within a few blocks of it removes most of the daily driving, which in a city whose bus network is a year old is worth more than an extra room.
University of Agriculture Faisalabad
Hidden gemCulture · Jail Road, west of the centre
A campus dating to 1906, laid out with botanical collections, old brick teaching blocks and one of South Asia's oldest agricultural research libraries.
Local tip: The grounds are open and almost nobody who is not a student or a farmer ever walks them. The old buildings on the original quadrangle and the botanical gardens are the best half hour of quiet in Faisalabad, and the campus canteens are where the city's cheapest good food is.
