Expatriate policies underwrite at purchase, so conditions declared later become exclusions. International cover matters mainly for medical evacuation — but note that from Faisalabad the first escalation is Lahore rather than Dubai, which makes the domestic referral network more important than in Peshawar or Multan.

Register at a hospital near where you live and identify the Lahore fallback
Allied Hospital in the centre, the District Headquarters Hospital and the Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology are the large public tertiary centres; the private hospitals along Susan Road and Canal Road are where most foreign residents go first. Register before you need to, and know which Lahore hospital you would be referred to for anything complex.

Programme Rescue 1122 and Edhi 115
The Punjab Emergency Service runs ambulance, fire and rescue on 1122 across all Punjab districts with a published average response under eight minutes — it is the best-run emergency service in Pakistan and Faisalabad gets the full service, not a partial one. Edhi's charitable ambulances on 115 are the other number to hold.

Check your own district's health card position rather than assuming
Punjab's health card programme has been narrowed, restored and re-scoped repeatedly, and eligibility is not uniform across the province — the published position covers the whole population of some divisions and, elsewhere in Punjab, the poor, people with disabilities and the transgender community. Faisalabad is not in the universally covered group. None of it applies to foreign nationals anyway, but if you employ household staff it decides what happens when one of them is admitted.

Prepare for smog season in October, not December
Buy HEPA purifiers sized for the bedrooms and your work room, and properly fitted respirator masks rather than surgical ones. Prices rise and stock disappears once the season starts. The Punjab government's AQI dashboard publishes hourly readings and a daily city ranking for Faisalabad, which is the honest way to decide whether to go outside.

Sort routine dental and optical privately and cheaply
Private dentistry, optometry and diagnostics in Faisalabad are good and cost a fraction of European or Gulf prices, which is why many residents pay out of pocket and insure only for the serious end. It is a rational way to structure cover here.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Punjab's health card is not the universal scheme Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's is, and Faisalabad is on the wrong side of that line.

KP's Sehat Card Plus covers every family in the province — more than 10.6 million of them — for free inpatient care up to PKR 1 million a year. Punjab's published eligibility is narrower and geographically uneven: the whole population in some divisions, and elsewhere the poor, people with disabilities and the transgender community. Faisalabad division is not among the universally covered ones. Foreign nationals are outside both schemes regardless, but anyone writing 'Pakistan has a health card' is flattening a real difference between provinces, and the scope has been changed more than once — check the current position with the Punjab programme rather than relying on any published summary including this one.

Being two hours from Lahore is the most underrated health fact about Faisalabad.

For a small set of serious diagnoses the realistic plan in Peshawar or Multan involves leaving the country. From Faisalabad it involves a two-hour drive on the M-3 to a city with Shaukat Khanum, the teaching hospitals and a deep private sector. That materially reduces how much you are relying on medical evacuation cover, and it means the question to ask an insurer is about domestic referral and ambulance transfer rather than about international repatriation.

Rescue 1122 here is the full Punjab service, and that is not true everywhere in Pakistan.

The Punjab Emergency Service was created under the Punjab Emergency Service Act 2006, runs emergency ambulance, fire and rescue on one number across every Punjab district with a published average response time under eight minutes, and has provided technical assistance to other provinces. Other provinces replicated the number with varying scope and maturity. Assuming 1122 means the same thing in every Pakistani city is exactly the kind of generalisation that fails at the moment it matters — in Faisalabad it means the full service.

The province publishes its own hourly air quality data, and it is better than the apps.

Punjab runs a public AQI dashboard covering more than thirty districts including Faisalabad, with hourly station readings, forecasts, monthly trends, a town-wise map and separate health advisories for the general public and for vulnerable groups. It is the province's own monitoring network rather than a crowd-sourced sensor mesh, and it publishes a daily ranking that lets you see exactly where Faisalabad sits relative to Lahore on any given morning. Use it to decide about outdoor exercise and school runs in December rather than guessing from the sky.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming a government health card scheme covers you — none of them cover foreign nationals.
Assuming Punjab's health card works like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's universal one.
Arriving in November without air purifiers already bought.
Not establishing a respiratory management plan before smog season if you or a child has asthma.
Buying evacuation-heavy international cover without checking the domestic referral pathway to Lahore.
