Essential Bengali phrases

The standard greeting. Gazipur speaks standard Bengali with a Dhaka-region accent — unlike Chattogram, nothing here will be unintelligible to you if you have learned Bangla.

Used in Bengali to mean the ready-made garment industry as a whole. In Gazipur it is not one industry among several — it is the reason the city has 2.7 million people and the reason you are here.

Factory. The unit of geography here: people describe where they live by which karkhana or which industrial area, not by ward or postcode.

Worker. The most politically loaded word in Gazipur — wage negotiations, unrest and factory closures are ordinary news here in a way they are not in the capital's white-collar districts.

The Minimum Wage Board, which sets the sectoral minimum wage. It fixed the garment minimum at Tk 12,500 a month from December 2023, and any conversation about pay here starts from that number.

'Crossroads' — and in Gazipur, the Chowrasta, the junction at Chandana where the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway meets the Tangore road. It is the city's reference point for everything.

The southern, industrial end of Gazipur City Corporation, on the Turag opposite Dhaka. It is Zone 1 of the corporation and functionally part of the capital's built-up area — many people who say they live in Dhaka live in Tongi.

The three-wheeler auto-rickshaw. With the BRT abandoned and no metro reaching the city, CNGs, buses and ride-hailing are the whole answer to getting around Gazipur.

Traffic. On the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway through Gazipur it is the defining daily fact — a corridor carrying commuters, factory traffic and national freight through a construction site that ran for nine years.

The world congregation held on the Turag banks at Tongi, usually in January or February and often in two phases. It draws millions of people from around 150 countries and is described as the second-largest Muslim gathering in the world. Plan around it — it reshapes traffic across the whole corridor.

The sal forest — the tract of deciduous sal woodland that Gazipur's factory belt was carved out of, and what remains of it at Bhawal and around Sreepur. It is why the district still has genuine green weekends.
