Between October and April, Queensland is on AEST and New South Wales is on AEDT. A phone in Coolangatta can pick up a Tweed Heads tower and jump an hour, and back again. Set the time zone manually to Brisbane rather than automatically if you live south of Burleigh — people miss flights and meetings over this every summer.

Register for emergency warnings before storm season
The Gold Coast sits in a cyclone and severe-storm zone; ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred crossed in March 2025. The national emergency alert system and the Bureau of Meteorology app both push warnings to phones in an affected area, and both need a working Australian number. Storm season runs roughly November to April.

Things most newcomers don’t know

You cannot activate an Australian SIM from overseas on a foreign passport.

The identity verification rules require you to be in Australia. Landing with a live local number is not achievable unless you already hold Australian identity documents. Buy the SIM early if you like, but plan the first hour after landing around activating it.

Your phone will get the time wrong near the border for five months of the year.

Queensland does not observe daylight saving and New South Wales does. A handset set to automatic time zone in Coolangatta, Bilinga or Currumbin can latch onto a Tweed Heads tower and silently move an hour. It is the single most common practical annoyance of living on the southern Gold Coast, and the fix is to set the time zone manually.

The hinterland has almost no coverage, and it is twenty minutes away.

Springbrook, Numinbah, Currumbin Valley and Lamington are where locals spend weekends, and coverage there is thin and network-dependent. If your plan involves walking in the ranges, buy the Telstra network through a reseller and tell someone your route — this is a safety point rather than a convenience one, and the ranges are close enough that people underestimate them.

Home internet is a wholesale market where the retailer barely matters.

The NBN is a national wholesale network, so most retailers resell an identical connection. What varies is the speed tier and the typical evening speed figure retailers must publish. Compare that number rather than the plan name — and in a high-rise apartment ask specifically what technology reaches the building, because some towers are on shared or legacy connections.

Common mistakes to avoid

Expecting to activate from abroad on a foreign passport — you must be in Australia.
Leaving the phone on automatic time zone near the border in summer and being an hour out.
Choosing a network on beachfront performance and finding it has nothing in Springbrook.
Signing a 12- or 24-month postpaid contract before you know which end of the coast you will live on.
Taking the advertised NBN plan for a high-rise apartment without asking what technology actually reaches the building.
