If you hold a temporary visa, you are not — check your visa class before booking anything. If you are a citizen, a permanent visa holder or a New Zealand citizen on a special category visa, the three-month clock runs from when you became a Queensland resident.

Book at a Transport and Motoring Customer Service Centre
Transfers are done in person. The Southport and Robina centres carry most of the coast's demand; Beenleigh and Nerang frequently have earlier appointments for the same transaction.

Sit the tests, if required
The written road rules test is taken at the centre. The practical test is booked separately and is the constraint — book as soon as you are eligible rather than when you feel ready.

Attend with documents, surrender the overseas licence and pay
Bring the overseas licence, translation if needed, passport and visa evidence, and proof of a Queensland address. You hand over the foreign licence, a photo and signature are captured, and the card is posted to you.

Test your real commute before you sign a lease
The M1 between the Gold Coast and Brisbane is the single most congested corridor in Queensland, and the Coomera Connector is being built precisely because of it. If your job is in Brisbane and your home is on the coast, drive the route at 7am on a Tuesday before you commit — the off-peak time and the peak time are not the same journey.

Things most newcomers don’t know

On a temporary visa you never have to convert, which is unique to Queensland.

Every other state ties the deadline to how long you have lived there. Queensland ties it to your visa: temporary visa holders can drive indefinitely on a valid overseas licence. That is real money and real time saved for a 482 or student visa holder — but it also means you have no Queensland licence to use as 100-point photo ID, which quietly complicates renting, banking and age checks.

The light rail now reaches Burleigh Heads, which changes where you can live without a car.

G:link Stage 3 extends 6.7 kilometres from Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads with eight new stations. A tram completed the first full-alignment run on 30 April 2026 and passenger services were planned for the middle of the year. Combined with the existing line to Helensvale and the heavy rail interchange there, that puts a genuine car-free corridor along the central and southern beach strip for the first time. Check the current service status before you rely on it, and note that the network still does not reach Coolangatta.

You will cross a state border more often than you expect, and it is not signposted like one.

The Queensland–New South Wales line runs through the middle of Coolangatta and Tweed Heads. Gold Coast Airport sits on it. Speed limits, road rules and enforcement are broadly harmonised but not identical, the police forces are different, and for five months a year the clock changes as you cross. Register which state you are in before you argue with anyone about a fine.

A Queensland licence is the identity document everything else runs on.

It is the standard primary photo ID for the 100-point check, for rental applications and for age verification. Temporary visa holders who are not required to convert often choose to anyway for exactly this reason — the transaction that takes a local seconds takes you a passport and a folder of secondary documents.

Common mistakes to avoid

Booking a licence transfer you are not required to make, because you are on a temporary visa.
Letting the three-month clock lapse after becoming a permanent resident and driving unlicensed.
Assuming your country is recognised without checking the TMR list.
Taking a Brisbane job and a Gold Coast lease without driving the M1 at 7am first.
Assuming the tram reaches Coolangatta or the airport — it does not.
