Check whether your jurisdiction exchanges directly
Ontario exchanges with every Canadian province and territory and with a specific list of countries. If yours is on it, an equivalent licence converts straight to a full Class G. If not, you enter graduated licensing — but read the next step before assuming that means a long wait.

Claim the experience credit if you are not from an exchange country
Since 1 July 2026 you can claim a maximum of twelve months of driving experience by presenting an original, valid foreign licence. With twelve months credited you can take the G2 road test immediately, then wait at least a further twelve months before the full G road test. Bring the original — a recently reissued licence shows a recent date and loses you the credit you actually earned.

Book a DriveTest appointment, and consider a smaller centre nearby
Exchanges and road tests run through DriveTest centres. Waterloo Region's is busy, particularly around the three term start dates; Guelph, Stratford and Brantford often have earlier road test slots and the test itself is identical. The difference can be months at peak.

Learn how the ION interacts with traffic before you drive downtown
The light rail runs in the street through both city centres with its own signals, restricted left turns across the tracks and dedicated lanes that are not always obvious to a driver who has never seen one. Cyclists get caught in the flangeway grooves; drivers get caught turning across a train. Walk or ride the corridor once before you drive it in the dark.

Quote insurance before you buy a car, and quote by postal code
Ontario auto insurance is private and heavily territory-rated. Waterloo Region is meaningfully cheaper than Brampton, Mississauga or Toronto for the same driver and car. Quote through a broker as well as direct, and quote again at every renewal rather than letting it roll.

Learn to pass a buggy, and expect them from the first week
Old Order Mennonite communities farm the townships north and west of the region, and their horse-drawn buggies travel the same rural roads, signposted and lit but doing perhaps twelve km/h. Slow well back, pass wide and smoothly, do not sound the horn, and treat gravel shoulders as unsafe for the horse. Collisions here are serious and the fault is almost always the car's.

Things most newcomers don’t know

The 1 July 2026 experience credit is the most important recent change for anyone outside the exchange list.

Before it, drivers from non-agreement countries served a waiting period inside graduated licensing regardless of how long they had actually been driving. Now up to twelve months of foreign experience is credited on presentation of an original licence, which lets you sit the G2 straight away. Almost everything written before mid-2026 overstates how long you will be restricted.

You can genuinely live here without a car, and the corridor is exactly nineteen kilometres wide.

The ION plus the Iron Horse and Spurline trails make the Kitchener–Waterloo axis workable on foot, bike and rail in a way no other Canadian city of this size manages. Step off that axis — into Cambridge, into the outer suburbs, into the townships — and it becomes as car-dependent as anywhere. The practical rule is that the corridor is the transit city and everything else is not, and rents reflect that.

A G2 is not a learner's permit, and mistaking it for one costs a year of independence.

G2 holders drive alone, on any road, with restrictions on blood alcohol and on passengers for younger drivers. Newcomers frequently assume they cannot drive unaccompanied until the full G. Given how much of the region sits off the ION corridor, that assumption narrows the job market as well as the social life.

Blowing snow across open farmland closes the roads out of the region, not the roads inside it.

Kitchener is inland with less lake moderation than Toronto or Hamilton, and the highways out towards Stratford, Listowel and Guelph run across flat open fields with nothing to break the wind. Whiteout and drifting close them regularly while the city streets are merely snowy. If your commute leaves the built-up area, the forecast that matters is the one for the county, not the one for the city.

Common mistakes to avoid

Relying on pre-July-2026 guidance about waiting periods for non-agreement jurisdictions.
Arriving without the original licence, or with a recently reissued one that hides your real experience.
Turning left across the ION tracks where it is restricted, or riding a bike into the flangeway grooves.
Passing a horse-drawn buggy too close, too fast, or with a horn.
Not requesting a claims-free letter from your home insurer before departing.
Assuming an International Driving Permit substitutes for an Ontario licence once you are a resident. It does not.
