Establish what your contract actually does
Umowa o pracę enrols you in ZUS and therefore NFZ automatically. A B2B arrangement means you register and pay your own contributions, with the health element calculated on your income rather than at a flat rate.

Register with a primary care clinic
Submit a deklaracja wyboru naming your GP at any NFZ przychodnia. It is a single form, free, and you can change practice a limited number of times per year at no cost.

Register your family separately
Dependent spouses and children are not covered automatically. Your employer must file a ZUS ZCNA form for each of them. Nobody prompts you and the omission only surfaces when someone is turned away at a clinic desk.

Medicover, LuxMed, Enel-Med and Scanmed are the usual names, and Scanmed has particularly deep coverage in Kraków. Read the clinic list rather than the brand — packages differ enormously in which locations and specialists they actually include.

112 for emergencies and SOR hospital emergency departments for serious cases. Between 18:00 and 08:00 and at weekends, nocna i świąteczna opieka zdrowotna covers ordinary problems and is a separate service from your daytime clinic.

November to February brings temperature inversions that hold pollution over the city. Check the flat's heating, consider a HEPA purifier for the bedroom, and follow the sensor map rather than guessing from the view out of the window.

Things most newcomers don’t know

The clinic desk checks your PESEL, and nothing else.

Poland runs eWUŚ, a live electronic check of insurance status. You give your PESEL, the system returns green or red, and that is the whole verification. It also means an administrative failure upstream — an employer that filed late, a family member never registered — presents as you being uninsured at the counter with no way to argue it there.

Your spouse and children are not covered just because you are.

Family members must be separately reported to ZUS on a ZCNA form, normally by your employer. It is a two-minute administrative act that is routinely forgotten during onboarding, and the failure only becomes visible when a child is refused at a paediatric clinic. Ask HR to confirm it has been filed rather than assuming.

Kraków banned solid fuel in 2019; the communes around it did not.

Since 1 September 2019 burning coal or wood inside the city has been unlawful, which measurably improved the air. But Kraków sits in a river basin that traps cold air, and the surrounding Małopolska municipalities are still replacing hundreds of thousands of old boilers. On a still January night the pollution simply drifts in. This is why the improvement inside the city has not ended the problem.

A private package is a normal benefit here, and the brand tells you almost nothing.

Nearly every professional employer in Kraków offers LuxMed, Medicover, Enel-Med or Scanmed, so an offer without one has a real gap worth negotiating. But packages are sold in tiers: which clinics, which specialists, whether diagnostics and dentistry are included. Two colleagues on the same-named provider can have very different access, and the detail is in the tier, not the logo.

Common mistakes to avoid

Signing a B2B contract without working out who is paying your health contribution.
Assuming family members are covered automatically without the ZUS ZCNA filing.
Never submitting a clinic declaration and turning up expecting to be seen.
Judging a private package by its brand rather than its clinic list and tier.
Renting a flat with an individual solid-fuel stove, which is now unlawful to burn in and expensive to fix.
