Rynek Główny & the Cloth Hall
Landmark · Stare Miasto
Europe's largest preserved medieval market square, ringed by cafés and crossed by every visitor in the city.
Local tip: Go under it. The Rynek Underground museum sits four metres below the square on the excavated eleventh-century street level, and almost nobody standing in the queue for a horse carriage knows it is there.
Kazimierz & Plac Nowy
Neighborhood · South of the old town
The historic Jewish quarter, now the city's densest concentration of bars, synagogues, galleries and Sunday flea markets.
Local tip: Szeroka is the postcard street and Plac Nowy is the working one. The Okrąglak rotunda in the middle of the square sells zapiekanki until dawn, and the Saturday morning market around it is where locals actually shop.
Nowa Huta
Neighborhood · East, 25 minutes by tram
A complete socialist-realist town built from nothing in 1949 around a steelworks, with boulevards, courtyards and more green space per resident than anywhere else in the city.
Local tip: Take tram 4 to Plac Centralny and walk the radiating avenues. The flats here are the largest and cheapest in Kraków, the trees are seventy years old, and the district has an entirely different rhythm from the tourist city.
Podgórze & Zabłocie
Culture · South bank of the Vistula
Post-industrial riverside district holding Schindler's Factory, the MOCAK contemporary art museum, and the ghetto memorial on Plac Bohaterów Getta.
Local tip: The chairs on Plac Bohaterów Getta are a memorial, not street furniture — one for every thousand people deported from the square. Cross the Bernatka footbridge from Kazimierz rather than driving.
Kopiec Krakusa
Landmark · Podgórze
A prehistoric mound of unknown origin on a hill above the south bank, with the best free view over the whole city.
Local tip: Climb it at dusk in September or May. On a clear winter day you can see the Tatras from the top — and on a bad winter day you can see the inversion layer sitting on the city, which is instructive in its own way.
Zakrzówek
Hidden gemNature · Dębniki, 15 minutes from the centre
A flooded limestone quarry with vertical white cliffs and turquoise water, opened as a supervised public bathing park after decades of being off-limits.
Local tip: The lagoon complex opened properly in 2024 with lifeguards, pontoons and changing rooms, and it is a fifteen-minute bus ride from the old town. Go on a weekday morning. Swimming outside the marked area is genuinely dangerous — the quarry is over thirty metres deep with cold layers.
