Book a Bürgeramt appointment as soon as you have a move date
Slots are released through the city's online system across the district Bürgerämter. Leipzig has grown by more than a hundred thousand people since 2010 and appointments are tighter than newcomers expect. Take any district rather than waiting for the nearest, and check early in the morning when cancellations appear.

Get the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung when you sign
Whoever provides your accommodation must confirm your move-in in writing, and by law within two weeks. Sublets and shared flats are where this gets forgotten. Without the form you will be turned away at the counter and the whole chain stalls behind it.

The appointment itself is short. Your employer, your bank, your health insurer and the Ausländerbehörde will each want the Meldebescheinigung, so buy extra copies at the counter rather than making a second trip.

Answer the religion question as the tax question it is
Declaring membership of a recognised church starts automatic church tax at 9% of your income tax in Saxony. Declaring none is lawful and simple. Leaving afterwards is a formal act at the registry with a fee, effective from the following month rather than backdated.

Consider the Chancenkarte if you do not yet have a job offer
The opportunity card is a points-based residence permit for qualified people to come to Germany and look for work, scoring qualifications, experience, age and language ability. It permits limited part-time work and trial employment while you search. It is a route into the country rather than a settlement path — convert it to a work permit or a Blue Card once you have a contract.

Apply for the residence permit or EU Blue Card as soon as your registration certificate exists. If your entry visa expires while the file is pending, a Fiktionsbescheinigung preserves your right to stay and work — ask for it rather than assuming you have to stop.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Leipzig's registration appointments are tighter than the city's relaxed reputation suggests.

The city has added well over a hundred thousand residents since 2010 — proportionally the fastest growth of any large German city — and administrative capacity has followed rather than led. People arriving from Berlin or Munich expect an easy ride and leave booking until they land. Check the system early in the morning, accept any district office, and book before you have finalised the flat if the system lets you.

The Chancenkarte lets qualified people arrive first and find the job afterwards.

Introduced in 2024, the opportunity card is a points-based permit scoring qualification, work experience, German and English ability, age and previous German connections. It allows a stay of up to a year with limited part-time work and two-week trial employment periods while you look. For a city like Leipzig, where salaries are lower but the market is open, it is a far more practical entry than waiting for a foreign employer to sponsor you sight unseen.

Saxony charges the standard 9% church tax, and the question is asked very quickly here.

Church membership in Saxony is among the lowest in Germany, so the registration clerk asks the religion question briskly and most people answer it as demography rather than as a tax election. Declaring a recognised church starts automatic deduction of 9% of your income tax liability. Leaving later costs a fee and takes effect only from the following month, so a careless January answer costs a full year.

Check the degree against anabin before anyone files anything.

The EU Blue Card requires a German degree or one recognised as equivalent, and the anabin database is where that is settled. An institution listed as H+ makes it routine; an unlisted one requires an individual ZAB assessment that takes weeks and has to be started early. This applies to vocational qualifications too, which matters more in Germany than almost anywhere and is the step foreign applicants most often skip.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming a mid-sized eastern city has spare registration capacity and leaving the booking until arrival.
Signing a sublet whose holder will not issue a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung.
Declaring church membership without realising Saxony charges 9% of your income tax for it.
Waiting for an employer to sponsor you when the Chancenkarte would let you look for work in person.
Letting the entry visa expire while the Ausländerbehörde file is pending instead of asking for a Fiktionsbescheinigung.
