What to know before you go
The car deadline is 10 days and the licence deadline is 30 — that order surprises everyone
CriticalKentucky gives a new resident 30 days to get a Kentucky driver credential, but only 10 days to insure, title and register a vehicle, vessel or mobile home. Most states run the other way round, so people arrive, plan to sort the licence first, and blow the shorter deadline without noticing. Registration goes through the Fayette County Clerk; licensing goes through a state Driver Licensing Regional Office. Different buildings, different governments.
Your local wage tax has two layers and only one of them depends on where you live
CriticalThe Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government levies a 2.25% occupational licence fee on compensation earned in Fayette County, whoever you are. Fayette County Public Schools levies a further 0.5% on residents' compensation for work performed in the county. So a Lexington resident working in Lexington pays 2.75% locally; someone commuting in from Jessamine or Scott County pays 2.25%. None of this appears on your Kentucky state return.
Kentucky's flat rate dropped to 3.5% on 1 January 2026 — and the Revenue Cabinet's own summary page is behind
ImportantHouse Bill 1 stepped the rate down from 4% to 3.5% for tax years beginning on or after 1 January 2026, and the Department of Revenue's 2026 withholding formula uses 3.5% with a $3,360 standard deduction. Its general individual-income-tax page still reads 4%, which is correct for the 2025 return you file this spring and wrong for the year you are actually earning in. Check the withholding formula, not the summary page.
REAL ID is optional in Kentucky, and most Kentuckians still do not have one
ImportantKentucky issues both a standard credential and a REAL ID version, and roughly half the state holds the latter. Since 7 May 2025 a licence without the black star cannot be used at an airport security checkpoint. The REAL ID version costs a couple of dollars more and needs two proofs of Kentucky residency instead of one — worth doing at the same appointment rather than twice.
Kentucky assesses property at 100% of fair cash value — do not compare mill rates with a western state
ImportantThe Fayette County PVA values property at full market value as of 1 January, and the tax rates are applied to that. States like Colorado assess a single-digit percentage of value first, so a headline rate from there means something entirely different. Kentucky also charges an annual property tax on your car, collected by the county clerk when you renew registration in your birth month.
A University of Kentucky ID is a free citywide bus pass
Good to knowUK and Lextran run a partnership under which students and staff ride any Lextran route across the city free, on the strength of a valid UK ID. In a city where the university is the largest employer, that quietly makes a one-car household workable for a lot of households that assume it is not.

Not a tourist theme — thoroughbred breeding, sales, veterinary medicine and bloodstock are a real professional sector here, with specialisms that exist almost nowhere else in the world.

Lexmark spun out of IBM's Lexington operation in 1991 and its campus still seeds much of the local software and hardware talent pool. Several mid-size headquarters sit here rather than in a bigger metro precisely because costs are low.

Central Kentucky produces most of the world's bourbon, and Lexington sits in the middle of it with distilleries in town and a dozen within an hour. Hospitality, logistics and cooperage work follows.

Two large hospital systems beyond the university, plus an unusual concentration of veterinary and equine medical research. Nursing and allied health roles are the most reliably open to newcomers.

Keeneland
Culture · Versailles Road, west of the city
A 1936 racecourse in limestone and ivy that runs only two short meets a year and holds the world's biggest thoroughbred auctions in between.
Local tip: Sunrise trackwork is free, open to the public most mornings in the meets, and comes with breakfast at the Track Kitchen alongside trainers and grooms. It is a better morning than race day and costs nothing.
The Kentucky Horse Park
Nature · Iron Works Pike, north of town
A 1,200-acre working horse farm and park with two museums, an international three-day-event course and retired champions in the paddocks.
Local tip: The campground is one of the cheapest good places to stay in the region, and the park's outdoor trails are free to walk outside event weekends. Check the calendar — a major show closes half of it.
The Distillery District
Nightlife · Manchester Street, west of downtown
The old James E. Pepper distillery site turned into bars, a brewery, a music venue and food halls, with the original rickhouses still standing.
Local tip: Goodfellas and the Barrel House end is where locals go; the newer Manchester Street development is where visitors do. Walk between them along the Town Branch Trail rather than driving.
Ashland, the Henry Clay Estate
Landmark · Richmond Road, east of downtown
The 1806 estate of Henry Clay, the senator who spent forty years brokering the compromises that delayed the Civil War, with the grounds free to walk.
Local tip: The house tour is worth it, but the real value is the grounds: eighteen acres of old trees in the middle of the city, free, and almost empty on a weekday morning.
Legacy Trail & Town Branch Commons
Nature · Downtown out to the Horse Park
A 12-mile paved trail from downtown to the Kentucky Horse Park, now stitched into the city centre by the Town Branch Commons corridor built over Lexington's buried creek.
Local tip: This is the single best argument for living inside New Circle. You can ride from a downtown flat to open horse country without touching a road, which almost no American city this size can offer.
Wolf Run & the McConnell Springs pocket
Hidden gemNature · Off Old Frankfort Pike, industrial west side
The spring where Lexington was named in 1775, now a 26-acre nature preserve hidden behind warehouses, with a blue hole and karst features.
Local tip: Almost nobody outside Lexington knows it exists, and plenty inside do not either. Free, quiet, and the clearest place to see the limestone geology that made the whole region what it is.
