Pick your passport to see whether you can enter India — and what it takes to stay.
Entry rules come from github.com/imorte/passport-index-data, updated 17 February 2026. They change without notice — confirm with the official immigration service before booking.
India has no digital nomad or freelancer route. Salaried work means an employer-sponsored employment visa carrying a minimum annual salary, applied for from your country of residence before you travel. Once you land, a fourteen-day registration clock starts from the immigration stamp. Lucknow is one of India's small number of full FRROs, which is a materially better position than most Indian cities are in, but its jurisdiction stops short of Noida and Ghaziabad — those two UP districts report to Delhi.
Read the full step-by-step guideYou may drive on a valid foreign licence accompanied by an International Driving Permit for a limited period after arrival, then need an Indian licence applied for through the Parivahan portal. Two things make Lucknow easier than most Indian cities of its size: the roads on the new east side are wide and reasonably ordered, and the Red Line metro runs the full diagonal of the city, so a car is genuinely optional if you live and work along it.
Read the full step-by-step guidePAN first, then the account, then UPI. Which account you may open turns on your residential status under the Foreign Exchange Management Act — not on your visa and not on your income tax status, which are three different tests. Someone employed in India is generally FEMA-resident and opens an ordinary resident savings account rather than an NRE or NRO account. In a city with a small foreign population, branch staff default foreigners to NRO more often than in a metro, and correcting that later is tedious.
Read the full step-by-step guideEmployer group cover is the normal route and Lucknow's private hospitals are good and inexpensive by any international measure. The city punches well above its size in tertiary care because SGPGI and King George's Medical University take referrals from across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Nepal — specialist treatment that would mean a flight from most Indian cities of this size is available here. The health issue that actually shapes daily life is the winter air.
Read the full step-by-step guideEvery Indian SIM requires full identity verification, and for a foreign national that means passport, visa, photographs and proof of a local address, followed by a tele-verification step before outgoing calls and data switch on. Buy from a company-owned Jio or Airtel store rather than a kiosk. The number then becomes the key to UPI, bank one-time passwords and effectively every app you will use.
Read the full step-by-step guideYou are resident if you spend 182 days or more in the financial year, or 60 days plus 365 across the preceding four. Most new arrivals then land in RNOR — Resident but Not Ordinarily Resident — for two or three years, during which foreign income is generally outside Indian scope. The new regime is the default and the old regime must be actively elected. The two locally relevant points are that UP levies no professional tax at all, and that Lucknow was NOT among the cities added to the 50% house rent allowance band in 2026, so it remains a 40% city.

Reading a list isn’t learning it. Globe Quest turns these into a trainer — hear each phrase spoken, drill them with spaced repetition, and get scored as you say them out loud.
India has only about fifteen full Foreigners Regional Registration Offices, and Lucknow is one of them, with jurisdiction over the whole of Uttar Pradesh except Noida and Ghaziabad — those two districts report to FRRO Delhi instead. Everywhere without a full FRRO, registration is performed by the district Superintendent of Police as an additional duty, with the slower turnarounds and thinner familiarity that implies. If your visa is valid for more than 180 days you must register within 14 days of the arrival stamp, and the application itself is filed online through e-FRRO. Confirm the office your address routes to on the portal rather than assuming — a Noida posting and a Lucknow posting are administered by different offices in different cities.
Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, West Bengal, Telangana and most of southern and eastern India deduct a monthly professional tax from salary. Uttar Pradesh does not levy one at all — the same net-pay line that appears in Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad or Bengaluru simply is not there. The amounts are small, capped at ₹2,500 a year where they exist, so this is not why you would choose Lucknow. It matters because it means a colleague's net-pay comparison between two Indian cities is rarely like-for-like, and payroll templates written for a Maharashtra entity sometimes carry the line across in error.
The Permanent Account Number gates salary, bank accounts, large purchases and your tax return. Foreign nationals apply on Form 49AA through Protean or UTIITSL; the free Aadhaar-based instant e-PAN is not available to you because you will not have an Aadhaar for at least 182 days. Without a PAN your employer may be required to withhold tax at a penal rate, recoverable only by filing a return the following year.
From late October to January Lucknow sits under Indo-Gangetic plain winter smog, compounded by post-harvest stubble burning upwind and by temperature inversions that trap everything at ground level. The weather in exactly those months is superb — 10°C mornings, dry sunny afternoons, the entire wedding and festival season. Both things are true. Treat an indoor air purifier as ordinary furniture rather than an indulgence, check the Central Pollution Control Board index the way you would check rain, and be more careful about outdoor exercise in December than in the 44°C of May.
Lucknow's reputation for tehzeeb survives as a working social system rather than a tourist-board line. Requests are made indirectly, aap is used where other north Indian cities would use tum, and being brusque with a shopkeeper, a landlord or a government clerk produces a materially worse outcome than being courteous with the same person. Newcomers who arrive with Delhi's transactional register consistently find Lucknow slower and less helpful than it needs to be, and consistently misdiagnose why.
The Gomti splits an old Lucknow of Imambaras, Chowk, Aminabad and Hazratganj from a new Lucknow of Gomti Nagar, Vibhuti Khand, malls and IT offices. They function differently: the old city is dense, walkable, cheap and difficult to drive in; the new city is planned, car-dependent and where almost every relocating professional ends up. The Red Line metro runs north-east to south-west and connects them properly, which is the single thing that makes living on one side and working on the other tolerable.
UP Secretariat, Vidhan Bhavan, LDA, UPPCL, the High Court's Lucknow bench
Uttar Pradesh is India's most populous state, and its entire administration sits here. Government and the ecosystem around it — law, consultancy, contracting, media — is the city's largest employer by a distance.
HCLTech, TCS, Tata Consultancy Services campus, Wipro, Genpact
Concentrated in Vibhuti Khand and Gomti Nagar rather than a single named park. Smaller and more services-weighted than Bengaluru or Pune, but it is the reason Gomti Nagar's rental market exists at all.
BrahMos Aerospace, Tata Advanced Systems, Aditya Birla, Adani Defence
Lucknow is one of six nodes of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, and the BrahMos missile production facility here is the highest-profile of them. A genuinely new sector for the city rather than a rebranded old one.
SGPGIMS, King George's Medical University, RML Institute, Medanta, Apollomedics
SGPGI and KGMU draw referrals from across UP, Bihar and Nepal, which makes Lucknow a tertiary-care centre far above its size — the practical upside for a resident is that specialist care is here rather than a flight away.
Chowk and Daliganj ateliers, SEWA Lucknow, Lucknow Chikan Handicrafts
GI-tagged hand embroidery employing tens of thousands, overwhelmingly women working from home. The value chain is a real part of the old-city economy, not a heritage exhibit.
IIM Lucknow, University of Lucknow, BBAU, CSIR-CDRI, CSIR-NBRI, IIIT Lucknow
The Central Drug Research Institute and the National Botanical Research Institute are national CSIR laboratories, and IIM Lucknow is one of the older Indian Institutes of Management.
Landmark · Old City, Hussainabad
A 1784 assembly hall whose 50-metre vaulted ceiling stands with no beams or pillars, built as famine relief so that the nobility could work by night undoing what labourers built by day.
Local tip: Take the official guide for the labyrinth — the passages above the hall are unlit, unmarked and easy to get lost in, which is the entire point. Go at opening, and buy the combined ticket that also covers the Chhota Imambara and the Picture Gallery.
Neighborhood · Central Lucknow
The colonial-era shopping street, re-cobbled and given uniform cream-and-pink façades and Victorian lamps in a 2010 restoration.
Local tip: Come after seven in the evening and just walk it — 'ganjing' is a local verb for exactly this. Royal Café's basket chaat is the thing to eat standing up, and Ram Advani's bookshop closed in 2016 but the shopfront is still there.
Culture · Near the Gomti, central
The ruined British compound besieged for 87 days in 1857 and deliberately left shell-marked, with the cannon damage never repaired and a cemetery of 2,000 graves.
Local tip: It is the least-visited major site in the city and the most affecting. Go on a weekday morning; the lawns are empty, the museum in the cellar has the siege model, and the walls still carry the holes.
Food · Old City
The old commercial spine — chikan workshops, attar sellers, kebab counters and Lucknow's real food culture packed into a few hundred metres.
Local tip: In winter, look for nimish — milk foam left out overnight to set in the dew, sold from steel trays at dawn and gone by nine. It exists nowhere else in India and roughly only from November to February.
Nature · Gomti Nagar Extension
376 acres of landscaped park with lakes, cycling loops and open lawns, on the new east side of the city.
Local tip: Go at sunrise or after five; the middle of the day is unusable for most of the year. The cycle track is properly separated, which is close to unique in the city.
Landmark · Gomti Nagar
An 108-acre expanse of Rajasthani sandstone — domes, colonnades and rows of stone elephants — built in the 2000s as a monument to Dalit social reformers.
Local tip: Vast, austere, architecturally divisive and lit dramatically at night. Whatever you make of the politics that produced it, the scale is genuinely startling and almost no visitor to Lucknow is told it exists.
