Get the IDP before you leave home
India issues International Driving Permits only to holders of Indian licences, so there is no way to obtain one after arrival. The IDP is valid only alongside your original national licence — carry both or neither counts.

Apply through Parivahan for the Lucknow RTO
Applications start on sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and route to the RTO covering your registered address. Holding a valid foreign licence can let you skip the learner's stage and sometimes the road test, but that is at the RTO's discretion rather than an entitlement, so plan for a test.

Try the Red Line before you buy anything
The metro runs from the airport at the south-west corner through Hazratganj to Munshipulia in the north-east, which is the diagonal most commutes actually follow. It is air-conditioned, cheap and unaffected by the fog that shuts roads in December. If your home and office are both near it, the case for a car largely disappears.

Carry the four documents whenever you drive
Licence, the vehicle's Registration Certificate, valid third-party insurance and a current Pollution Under Control certificate. Digital copies held in DigiLocker or mParivahan are legally accepted at checks, which is the sensible way to do it.

Re-register a vehicle brought in from another state
A vehicle moved permanently into Uttar Pradesh must be re-registered here and UP road tax paid, with a refund claimable from the state it came from. The rates are set by the state and calculated on the vehicle's value, so a car driven up from Delhi or Mumbai is not a free transfer.

Plan around December fog and the summer afternoon
Dense radiation fog on the Gangetic plain from late December to January regularly cuts highway visibility to a few metres and is the single largest road risk in this part of India. Between April and June, 44°C afternoons make a mid-day two-wheeler journey genuinely unpleasant. Both are predictable; schedule around them.

Things most newcomers don’t know

The Red Line runs along the exact diagonal most Lucknow commutes take.

The metro's single operational corridor connects Chaudhary Charan Singh airport in the south-west to Munshipulia in the north-east via Alambagh, Charbagh station and Hazratganj — which happens to be the axis linking the old city, the transport interchanges and the middle-class north-east. Very few Indian cities of this size have a metro at all, and fewer still have one whose one line is the right line. Check whether your commute sits on it before committing to a car.

You cannot obtain an International Driving Permit once you are in India.

India issues IDPs only to residents holding an Indian licence, so arriving without one leaves no bridge at all — you go straight to a full Indian licence application, learner's permit and possibly a test included. That costs weeks. Getting the IDP at home takes an afternoon.

Winter fog on the plain is the road hazard, not the summer heat.

From late December through January, radiation fog across the Indo-Gangetic plain routinely drops highway visibility below fifty metres, and the multi-vehicle pile-ups on the Lucknow–Agra and Purvanchal expressways are an annual news fixture. Trains and flights are delayed for days at a time in the same period. Build the buffer into travel plans rather than being surprised by it.

Bringing a car from another state is a tax event, not a paperwork step.

Road tax in India is a state levy paid up front for the life of the vehicle, so a permanent move re-triggers it in the destination state, with a refund claimable — slowly — from the origin state. People move to Lucknow expecting to drive the same car and discover a five-figure liability at re-registration. If the car is old, selling it and buying locally is often cheaper.

Common mistakes to avoid

Arriving without an IDP and discovering India will not issue you one.
Carrying the IDP without the original national licence, which makes it worthless.
Buying a car before testing whether the Red Line already covers your commute.
Driving the expressways in late-December fog without checking conditions.
Assuming a car brought from another state can keep its existing registration indefinitely.
