The single largest private employer in Dane County and the reason Madison has an unusually deep software labour market for its size. Epic's campus is in Verona, a few miles south-west, and it draws thousands of graduates a year — which also means a large share of the local rental demand arrives every summer on the same schedule.
Biotechnology & diagnostics
Exact Sciences, Promega, Catalent, Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation and a dense university spinout sector
Built directly on UW-Madison's research base — WARF has been patenting and licensing university discoveries since 1925, and the biotech cluster around it is one of the more established in the American Midwest. Exact Sciences is the anchor and is headquartered on the near-east side.
Insurance & finance
American Family Insurance, CUNA Mutual/TruStage, Summit Credit Union, National Guardian Life
American Family is headquartered in Madison and is one of the largest employers in the city. Wisconsin's mutual insurance and credit union sector is unusually strong nationally, and Madison is its centre — TruStage grew out of the credit union movement that Wisconsin largely invented.
Higher education & research
University of Wisconsin–Madison, UW Health, Madison College, Edgewood College, the Morgridge Institute
UW-Madison is a major public research university with around 50,000 students and is the city's largest employer overall. Its presence shapes everything from the rental calendar to the restaurant scene to the fact that the city has a world-class hospital system attached to it.
State government
State of Wisconsin agencies, the Legislature, the Capitol, Dane County and the City of Madison
Madison is the state capital, and public employment is a large, stable and recession-resistant share of the local labour market. It also means legislative sessions visibly change the rhythm of downtown — and that a lot of the city's professional network is lawyers, policy staff and lobbyists rather than founders.
Advanced manufacturing & food
Sub-Zero and Wolf, Sonic Foundry, Trek Bicycle (Waterloo), Placon, Madison-area dairy and food processors
Wisconsin's manufacturing base reaches Dane County in a higher-value form than the state average — appliances, precision instruments and bicycles rather than heavy metal. Trek is headquartered forty minutes east and is part of why the region's cycling culture is what it is.
