Essential German phrases

The squares. Mannheim's centre has no street names — 144 blocks each carry a letter and a number, so an address is 'P7, 24'. Learn to read one before you try to find anything inside the ring.

How a central address is actually said. Blocks west of the central axis run A to K and blocks east of it L to U, south to north, with no J; the number rises as you move away from the axis. House numbers inside one Quadrat are spread around all four of its streets.

Across the river — meaning Ludwigshafen, which is not just another city but another federal state. Rhineland-Palatinate has its own church tax rate, its own property tax model, its own school holidays and its own tenancy ordinances.

The official rent index. Mannheim publishes a qualified one, and since the state rent cap lapsed here at the end of 2025 it is the main instrument a tenant has left for arguing about what a flat should cost.

Literally 'blue mouth' — the archetypal Mannheimer: blunt, funny, unimpressed. The Bloomaulorden has been awarded to a local figure most years since the 1930s and is taken more seriously than the joke suggests.

The historic Electoral Palatinate, which straddled both banks of the Rhine and made Mannheim its capital. The regional identity, the dialect and the asparagus all belong to it rather than to Baden or to Swabia, and locals will correct you on that.

The local word for the parish fair — Kirchweih, worn down by the Kurpfälzisch dialect. Every district has one, they run through late summer and autumn, and they are the most reliable way to meet your neighbours.

Asparagus season, roughly late April to 24 June. In the Kurpfalz — Schwetzingen especially — this is a genuine seasonal event with roadside stalls, dedicated menus and a hard stop on midsummer's day.
