An irrigation channel. The network is medieval, the water rights attached to it are older than most Spanish institutions, and a property beside one has both a view and an obligation.

La huerta

The irrigated market-garden belt around the city, watered by acequias laid out under Moorish rule and still governed by a council of farmers. It is why the region exports vegetables to half of Europe.
El Bando de la Huerta

The Tuesday after Easter, when the entire city dresses in traditional huerta costume and eats outdoors. It is the biggest day of the Murcian year and the city does not work.

A-cho / PEE-ho
The two most Murcian interjections there are — roughly 'mate' and an all-purpose exclamation. You will hear both within an hour of arriving and neither is taught anywhere.
Paparajote
pa-pa-ra-HO-te
A lemon leaf dipped in batter and fried. You eat the batter and leave the leaf — doing otherwise is the classic newcomer mistake and everyone at the table is watching for it.
Marinera
ma-ree-NEH-ra
A ring of bread topped with russian salad and an anchovy, and the definitive Murcian tapa. Ordered by the unit, eaten standing, and the local measure of a bar.

The autumn storm system that can drop a year's rain in a day on Europe's driest region. It is the single serious weather risk here and it shapes where it is sensible to live.
