Under the Maharashtra Prohibition Act 1949, possessing or consuming liquor without a permit is an offence — one-day, one-year and lifetime permits are issued by the State Excise Department, and the penalties on the statute are real even though enforcement against ordinary consumers is inconsistent. Almost nobody tells newcomers this, in Mumbai or here. Nagpur adds a second layer: two of the districts adjoining it in Vidarbha, Wardha and Gadchiroli, are under full prohibition, so an hour's drive can put you in a dry district where possession is a straightforward offence. Chandrapur was dry from 2015 and had its ban lifted in 2021, which is why older guidance disagrees. Get a permit, and check the district before you carry anything out of the city.

Section 55 of the Maharashtra Rent Control Act 1999 requires every tenancy and leave-and-licence agreement to be in writing and registered, regardless of duration. That is materially different from Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and most of India, where an eleven-month agreement is notarised and registration only bites at twelve months. Stamp duty is 0.25% of the total rent for the licence period plus the refundable deposit, and the registration fee is a flat ₹1,000 in an urban area. It can be done online. If it is not registered and a dispute arises, the law presumes the tenant's version of the terms is correct unless the landlord proves otherwise — so an unregistered agreement is a problem for your landlord, not for you, but it also leaves you without a document anyone will act on.

If your visa is valid for more than 180 days you must register within 14 days of the arrival stamp. FRRO Mumbai has jurisdiction over the whole of Maharashtra, roughly 800 km west; local Foreigners Registration Officer duties are performed by the police here. In the normal case this is irrelevant because the application is filed and decided online through e-FRRO — but if you are called in, you are being called to another city on the far side of the state. Line up an address you can evidence before the fortnight is out, and ask your employer for a guest-house or serviced-apartment letter to register against if the lease will not be ready in time.

Nagpur is routinely among the hottest large cities in India, with 47°C recorded in the worst Mays and the surrounding Vidarbha districts regularly topping the national temperature tables. This is deep-continental dry heat with no coast to moderate it. Between March and June, arrange outdoor work and errands before eleven in the morning, treat the afternoon as unusable, and take heat illness seriously rather than treating it as discomfort. The compensation is a short, genuinely pleasant winter from December to February, which is exactly when the legislature and the orange crop both arrive.

Under the Nagpur Pact of September 1953, agreed when Vidarbha's Marathi-speaking districts joined the new state, Nagpur was made Maharashtra's second capital and at least one session of the legislature is held here each year. In practice that is the winter session: the government, the press corps and a large part of the state's administrative apparatus physically relocate to the Vidhan Bhavan for a few weeks, hotels fill, and central Nagpur's traffic and security arrangements change. The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court sits here permanently. If your work touches state government at all, the winter session is the most important few weeks of your year.

Pench is roughly ninety minutes north, Tadoba-Andhari about three hours south, and Umred-Karhandla and Bor are closer still. Nagpur is the aviation and road gateway to India's densest cluster of tiger reserves, and safaris here are a weekend thing residents actually do rather than a bucket-list trip. Core-zone permits are booked online well in advance through the forest department and sell out for weekends and holidays; buffer-zone safaris are easier to get and increasingly productive. Build it into how you think about living here — it is the strongest single argument for the city that nobody puts in a relocation brochure.
