Essential Marathi phrases

The Marathi greeting, palms together. Works everywhere in the state, and in Nagpur it signals you know which state you are in — which is not always obvious this far from Mumbai.

'What do you say?' — the Varhadi Vidarbha version of how's it going. The local Marathi dialect is noticeably different from Pune's and locals are quick to point it out.

The eastern region of Maharashtra, of which Nagpur is the capital. It has its own dialect, its own cuisine, its own politics and a long-running statehood movement. Calling it 'east Maharashtra' is technically right and locally tone-deaf.

Maharashtra law requires a permit to possess or consume liquor. One-day, one-year and lifetime permits exist. Almost nobody mentions it and it is on the statute book with real penalties.
