Most people arrive on a long-stay visa that becomes a residence permit only once validated online within three months. Renewals and changes of status run through ANEF, the national digital platform. Nantes has a large student population and a hiring market that recruits from it, so the route that matters most here after the initial validation is the change of status from student to worker — a procedure with its own deadlines and its own well-known failure mode.

EU and EEA licences are exchangeable without difficulty. Locally, the real driving question is whether to own a car at all: Nantes reintroduced the tram to France in 1985 and has built out from there, while its ring road is among the more reliably congested in the country.

French life runs on the RIB — your account details, handed over for salary, rent, utilities, tax and health reimbursements. Traditional banks want a proof of address you do not yet have; a digital account breaks the circularity in days. Getting a French SIM, and why the cheap tariffs are genuinely cheap
France has some of the cheapest mobile tariffs in Europe, a permanent legacy of the price war that followed Free Mobile's arrival in 2012. Prepaid SIMs are available on a passport. Contracts need a French RIB but are commonly month-to-month with no commitment, so the wait is short. Fibre across Nantes Métropole is extensive and cheap, with the usual caveats in the older centre and along the estuary.

France taxes the household rather than the individual, dividing income by a number of parts that rises with a spouse and children — which makes the system markedly favourable to families and less so to single high earners. What to know before you go
Apply for Visale before you view anything — Nantes has no rent cap
CriticalFrench landlords expect a garant, a French person earning several times the rent who accepts liability for it, and newcomers do not have one. Visale, run by Action Logement, is a free state-backed guarantee covering most people under 31 and most new employees of any age within a window of starting a job, and the certificate is issued online in days. It matters more here than in Lyon or Bordeaux, because Nantes applies no encadrement des loyers — there is no reference rent to check an asking price against, so the strength of your dossier is your only real leverage.
Home insurance is a legal obligation for tenants and the agent will stop the handover without it
CriticalFrench law requires a tenant to hold assurance habitation and to produce the attestation at the key handover and every year afterwards. A landlord may take out a policy on your behalf and bill you, and may ultimately end the lease. It costs very little and takes an hour online. Doing it the week before the handover rather than the morning of it is the whole trick.
Your first French payslips are taxed at a default rate that is usually wrong
CriticalPrélèvement à la source needs a rate, and the tax office has no history for you, so your employer applies the taux neutre from a published grid based on salary alone. It ignores your household, your children and any other income, so it is commonly far too high for a family and sometimes too low for a couple with two incomes. You can request a personalised rate through impots.gouv.fr once you have a tax number, and modulate it if your situation changes. Newcomers assume the deduction is simply what French tax costs and never look.
The airport is inside the city and its night curfew is real and enforced
ImportantThe plan to move Nantes-Atlantique to Notre-Dame-des-Landes was abandoned in 2018, so the airport stayed where it is — a few kilometres south of the centre, over Bouguenais and Rezé. A curfew between midnight and six in the morning has applied since April 2022, backed by fines that have run into millions of euros for operators who breach it. That makes the southern approach far more liveable at night than it was, but daytime noise under the flight path is a genuine consideration. Check the noise exposure map for a specific address before signing.
The tram network is good enough that a car is an active choice, not a default
ImportantNantes brought trams back to France in 1985, the first city to do it, and built out from there — three tram lines, the segregated busway that opened in 2006, Chronobus routes, river shuttles on the Loire and the Erdre, and a large bike-share system. Between that and a compact centre, a great many residents run no car at all. The ring road, by contrast, is one of the more reliably congested in France, which is an argument for living on the right side of it rather than for owning a better car.
Whether Nantes is in Brittany is a live question, not a historical footnote
Good to knowNantes was the capital of the Duchy of Brittany and the château in the city centre is the Château des ducs de Bretagne. Loire-Atlantique was separated from the Breton departments in the 1940s and now sits in the Pays de la Loire region, and campaigns for reunification have run continuously ever since. You will see the Breton flag constantly. Treating the city as straightforwardly not-Breton in conversation is a reliable way to start an argument you did not intend to have.

A workshop building enormous mechanical animals in the old shipyards, including a twelve-metre elephant that carries passengers.
Local tip: Book the elephant ride in advance in summer or you will not get on. The workshop gallery ticket is cheaper, quieter and arguably better — you watch the machines being built and tested.
Château des ducs de Bretagne
Landmark · City centre
The moated ducal castle in the middle of the city, with a free-to-walk rampart circuit and a genuinely good city history museum inside.
Local tip: The courtyard and the ramparts are free and open late — a lap of the walls at dusk is one of the better free things in any French city. The museum's rooms on Nantes and the slave trade are unflinching and worth the ticket.

A three-level nineteenth-century glass-roofed shopping arcade built into a hillside, connected by a monumental staircase.
Local tip: Go on a weekday morning when it is empty and the light comes through the roof properly. Most people photograph it from the bottom of the stairs; the view down from the top level is better.

A former fishing and river-pilot village of brightly painted houses and tangled lanes, directly opposite the city.
Local tip: Take the Navibus river shuttle rather than driving — it is on the ordinary transport ticket, it takes ten minutes and it is the correct way to arrive. Go at the end of the afternoon and eat on the quay.

The river François I is said to have called the most beautiful in France, running out of the city past châteaux, boathouses and towpaths.
Local tip: The towpath from Nantes toward Sucé-sur-Erdre is flat, shaded and largely empty on a weekday — an hour on a bike gets you properly out of the city. Rowing and canoe clubs along it take beginners.
L'Estuaire — the art trail to Saint-Nazaire
Hidden gemNature · Along the Loire, west of the city
A permanent trail of large-scale artworks planted along sixty kilometres of the Loire estuary between Nantes and the sea.
Local tip: Most visitors see the two or three pieces on the Île de Nantes and stop. The works further downstream — the half-submerged house at Couëron, the ones in the marshes — are free, almost unvisited, and the reason the trail exists. Take a car or the train and give it a full day.
