French landlords expect a garant, a French person earning several times the rent who accepts liability for it, and newcomers do not have one. Visale, run by Action Logement, is a free state-backed guarantee covering most people under 31 and most new employees of any age within a window of starting a job, and the certificate is issued online in days. It matters more here than in Lyon or Bordeaux, because Nantes applies no encadrement des loyers — there is no reference rent to check an asking price against, so the strength of your dossier is your only real leverage.

French law requires a tenant to hold assurance habitation and to produce the attestation at the key handover and every year afterwards. A landlord may take out a policy on your behalf and bill you, and may ultimately end the lease. It costs very little and takes an hour online. Doing it the week before the handover rather than the morning of it is the whole trick.

Prélèvement à la source needs a rate, and the tax office has no history for you, so your employer applies the taux neutre from a published grid based on salary alone. That makes the southern approach far more liveable at night than it was, but daytime noise under the flight path is a genuine consideration. Nantes brought trams back to France in 1985, the first city to do it, and built out from there — three tram lines, the segregated busway that opened in 2006, Chronobus routes, river shuttles on the Loire and the Erdre, and a large bike-share system. Between that and a compact centre, a great many residents run no car at all. The ring road, by contrast, is one of the more reliably congested in France, which is an argument for living on the right side of it rather than for owning a better car.

Nantes was the capital of the Duchy of Brittany and the château in the city centre is the Château des ducs de Bretagne. Loire-Atlantique was separated from the Breton departments in the 1940s and now sits in the Pays de la Loire region, and campaigns for reunification have run continuously ever since. You will see the Breton flag constantly. Treating the city as straightforwardly not-Breton in conversation is a reliable way to start an argument you did not intend to have.
