India's employment visa is employer-sponsored and carries a minimum annual salary threshold. Registration with the FRRO is mandatory within 14 days of arrival for visas valid over 180 days, done online through e-FRRO. Pune has an unusually large international student population alongside its corporate one, and the student registration route has its own requirements.
Read the full step-by-step guideYou may drive on a valid foreign licence with an International Driving Permit for a limited period after arrival, then need an Indian licence from the Pune RTO. Unlike Mumbai, driving here is genuinely viable โ except in and out of Hinjewadi at peak, which is among the worst commutes in India. The local answer is a two-wheeler, which is what most of Pune actually uses.
Read the full step-by-step guideWhich account you can open depends on your residential status under FEMA, not your visa. A foreign national resident in India for employment can generally open an ordinary resident savings account; students have their own considerations. Everything requires a PAN card and thorough KYC. Pune's large international student population means several branches near the universities handle foreign documentation routinely.
Read the full step-by-step guidePune has a deep private hospital sector โ Ruby Hall, Jehangir, Sahyadri and Deenanath Mangeshkar among them โ at a fraction of Western prices. The climate is genuinely kinder than Mumbai's or Delhi's, with no severe air season and no extreme humidity, which removes two of the biggest health burdens of Indian city life. What remains is monsoon-season mosquito-borne disease and water quality.
Read the full step-by-step guideIndia requires full identity verification for every SIM, and for foreign nationals that means passport, visa, photographs, local address proof and sometimes a reference, followed by verification. SIMs issued to foreigners carry validity tied to the visa. Pune's large international student population means the operator stores near the universities handle this more often than most.
Read the full step-by-step guideYou are tax-resident in India if you spend 182 days or more in a financial year, or 60 days or more in the year plus 365 across the preceding four. The new regime under section 115BAC has been the default since AY 2024-25 โ lower rates, very few deductions โ with the old regime available by election. Note that Pune, unlike Mumbai, is not a metro for the house rent allowance formula, which reduces the old regime's advantage even though the state layer is identical.

Reading a list isnโt learning it. Globe Quest turns these into a trainer โ hear each phrase spoken, drill them with spaced repetition, and get scored as you say them out loud.
Pune's employment is split between Hinjewadi in the north-west, Kharadi and Magarpatta in the east, and the Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial belt in the north. Crossing between them at peak is genuinely punishing โ the Hinjewadi commute in particular is notorious, with a single access road serving a park employing hundreds of thousands. Choose your neighbourhood by which cluster you work in, and drive the route at the real hour before you sign anything.
Employment visa holders with a visa valid over 180 days must register with the FRRO covering their Pune address within 14 days of arrival. Fully online through e-FRRO, no agent needed. You need passport, address proof, appointment letter, employment contract and proof of annual income.
As in Mumbai, almost every let is an 11-month leave-and-licence agreement rather than a lease, used to stay outside rent control, and it must be registered with the state with stamp duty payable. Your housing society will also vet you separately from the landlord. The mechanics are identical to Mumbai's; only the prices are different.
The Permanent Account Number gates banking, salary and most financial transactions, and without it your employer must deduct tax at a higher rate. Foreign nationals can apply online. Start it in week one.
At 560 metres on the Deccan plateau, Pune is several degrees cooler than Mumbai and dramatically less humid, with genuinely pleasant winters from November to February and a monsoon that greens the surrounding hills without paralysing the city. For anyone weighing Maharashtra postings, this and the roughly halved cost of living are the case for Pune.
Pune has an unusual density of colleges and a very large student population, which shapes rents, the food scene and the social life โ and means a distinct academic-year cycle in the rental market. It also means an unusually large international student community, particularly from Africa, Iran and Central Asia, and networks that come with it.
Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, Mercedes-Benz India, Volkswagen India, Force Motors
The Pimpri-Chinchwad belt is one of India's oldest and largest automotive clusters, and Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen both manufacture for the Indian market here.
Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Cognizant, Persistent Systems, Zensar
Hinjewadi's Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park is among India's largest technology parks by employment, with Kharadi and Magarpatta forming the eastern cluster.
Cummins, KPIT, Tata Technologies, Thermax, Emerson
Pune has an unusually deep engineering research base, much of it serving global automotive and industrial clients โ distinct from the services model dominant elsewhere in Indian IT.
Savitribai Phule Pune University, Symbiosis, FTII, COEP, Fergusson College
The 'Oxford of the East' nickname reflects a genuine concentration of universities, and the Film and Television Institute of India is the country's leading film school.
DRDO laboratories, ARDE, Army establishments
A long-standing defence research presence, much of it around the cantonment and Khadki, that predates the industrial and technology sectors.
Druva, Mindtickle, Icertis, Postman (originally)
A smaller but genuine product startup scene, weighted to enterprise software and often founded by engineers who trained in the automotive and services sectors.
Landmark ยท Central Pune
The 1732 fortified seat of the Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Empire โ the walls and gates survive, the palace within burned in 1828.
Local tip: The evening light-and-sound show is the usual visit; the better move is to walk the surrounding Peths in the morning, when the old city is at work and the wada sits in the middle of ordinary life.
Nature ยท 30km south-west
A hill fort on a Sahyadri ridge at 1,300 metres, reached by a steep climb, with pithla-bhakri and buttermilk sold at the top.
Local tip: The classic Pune weekend. Walk up rather than driving โ it takes about ninety minutes โ and go in the monsoon when the ridge is green and cloud rolls through the gates.
Culture ยท Yerawada
An 1892 palace where Gandhi, Kasturba and Sarojini Naidu were interned during the Quit India movement, now a memorial and museum.
Local tip: Kasturba Gandhi died here in 1944 and her samadhi is in the grounds. It is quiet, rarely crowded, and among the more affecting historical sites in India.
Neighborhood ยท East-central
Tree-lined lanes, cafรฉs and the Osho International Meditation Resort, with the adjacent public park open to all.
Local tip: The Osho Teerth gardens beside the resort are free, beautifully landscaped and open in the mornings โ most people assume the whole thing is gated and paid. German Bakery nearby is a Pune institution.
Neighborhood ยท Old city
The old walled quarters โ wooden wadas, brass and copper workshops, and a market that has run for centuries.
Local tip: Tulshibaug for household goods and Laxmi Road for saris. Go on foot in the morning; the lanes are not passable by car and that is the point.
Culture ยท 50km west toward Lonavala
2nd-century BCE Buddhist rock-cut caves with a chaitya hall, carved pillars and a waterfall beside them in the monsoon.
Local tip: Karla gets the visitors; Bhaja is a short distance away, older, quieter and has a monsoon waterfall right beside the steps. Combine with a ghat drive and you have the best day out from Pune.
