Status, Social Security number and a North Carolina ID
There is no post-arrival registration step in the US: your I-94 record is your status, and the 'admit until' date on it governs your stay rather than the expiry printed in your visa. The first weeks are about a Social Security number if you are work-authorised, or an ITIN if not. North Carolina then gives 60 days for the driver licence — comfortable, but the vehicle side has a trap that catches almost everyone.

New residents have 60 days to obtain an NC licence. Out-of-state US licences transfer without a road test; a licence from outside the US generally does not, so expect the knowledge, sign recognition, vision and road tests. Separately and more importantly, North Carolina will not accept an out-of-state insurance policy — liability cover must come from a carrier licensed in North Carolina. At the licence counter that is proved with a DL-123 certificate from your NC insurer, and the same NC-carrier rule governs registering a vehicle.

What to know before you go

You have 60 days for a licence, and your out-of-state car insurance will not be accepted

The trade is the income tax that Texas does not have. Decide which corner of the Triangle you actually work in before you pick a neighbourhood
CriticalRaleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, Morrisville and RTP are separate places connected almost entirely by motorway. There is no commuter rail — the Durham-Orange light rail was cancelled in 2019 and the regional commuter rail plan was shelved in 2023 — and GoTriangle's buses serve a fraction of the trips. A house that is twenty minutes from downtown Raleigh may be fifty minutes from a Durham lab at 8am. This is the single most common newcomer mistake in the region.
The winters are mild and the region still shuts down for an inch of snow
Good to knowRaleigh averages a handful of snow events a year, most of them small. It closes schools and empties supermarkets anyway, because the region has few ploughs and the real risk is ice rather than snow — freezing rain on hills is what causes the pile-ups. Do not judge; just keep a few days of food in the house and stay off the roads for the twenty-four hours after an ice event.

North Carolina Museum of Art
Culture · West Raleigh, off Blue Ridge Road
A free permanent collection in a daylit Thomas Phifer building, set in a 164-acre park of large-scale outdoor art and trails.
Local tip: The permanent collection is always free, which people from cities with $30 museums do not expect. The Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park behind it connects to the greenway system, so you can cycle in from downtown.
Dorothea Dix Park
Nature · Just south of downtown
308 acres of open hilltop on the site of a former state psychiatric hospital — larger than Central Park, with the best skyline view in the city.
Local tip: It is still being built out, which means it is mostly empty grass and old brick buildings with an extraordinary view. Sunset from the big field above the Rocky Branch is the local secret, and the sunflower field in late summer is genuinely spectacular.
The State Farmers Market & Eastern-style barbecue
Food · South-west Raleigh, off I-40
A large working farmers' market open year-round, next to the restaurants that anchor Raleigh's side of the state's barbecue argument.
Local tip: Go early on a Saturday for produce, and understand what you are eating: eastern North Carolina barbecue is whole hog with a thin vinegar and pepper sauce and no tomato. Saying you prefer the Lexington version is a conversational choice, not a neutral statement.
Downtown Raleigh — Fayetteville Street & the Warehouse District

A compact downtown with the State Capitol at one end, free state museums, and a converted warehouse district of bars and restaurants to the west.
Local tip: The Museum of Natural Sciences and the Museum of History are both free and the natural sciences one is the largest of its kind in the Southeast. The Warehouse District is where the evening actually happens — Fayetteville Street empties after work.
The Capital Area Greenway
Nature · Citywide, over 100 miles
A paved trail network following creeks and the Neuse River across the whole city, connecting parks, campuses and neighbourhoods.
Local tip: The Neuse River Trail alone runs 27 miles and links to the American Tobacco Trail toward Durham. Locals use it to commute by bike, which is realistic in a way that Raleigh's road network is not — check whether a neighbourhood connects to it before you rent.
William B. Umstead State Park
Hidden gemNature · Between Raleigh, Cary and RTP
5,600 acres of hardwood forest, three lakes and 22 miles of trail, sitting in the gap between the city, the airport and the research park.
Local tip: Almost every newcomer is sent to Falls Lake or Jordan Lake instead, an hour away. Umstead is genuinely inside the metro — you can hear planes from Reedy Creek — and on a weekday morning you will have a mile of trail to yourself. The old CCC-built lake and dam at Sycamore are the quiet end.
