Getting a SIM and home internet

SIMs are registered biometrically against your Emirates ID, or against a passport for a visitor line, and are sold at operator shops, kiosks and self-service machines. Prepaid is instant; postpaid needs an Emirates ID and usually a salary certificate. Home internet coverage is divided between the two operators building by building, so you generally get whichever one is installed rather than the one with the better offer — and in RAK, where development is dispersed and some communities are new or still building out, that variation is wider than in a dense city. Mobile coverage is good on the coastal plain and patchy in the mountains and wadis.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Your building picks your internet provider, and in RAK some buildings pick neither yet.

Mobile coverage stops mattering the moment you leave the coastal plain.

Signal on the plain and along the main roads is good. In the wadis, on parts of the Jebel Jais road and in the mountain interior it is patchy or absent — which is precisely where people go hiking and camping. Download offline maps, tell someone your route, and do not assume you can call for help from a canyon.

SIM registration is biometric, so buy from an official outlet.

The line is registered to your biometrics and your Emirates ID. A SIM sold informally and registered to a third party can be cut off without notice and is difficult to reclaim — which matters when your bank sends one-time codes to it. The saving at an unofficial shop is not worth the number.

Voice calling over some internet apps is restricted, which shapes how you stay in touch.

The UAE regulates voice and video calling over the internet, and several widely used apps' calling features are unavailable or unreliable on local networks even where their messaging works. Newcomers plan to call family free on an app they have used for years and find it does not connect. Check what works before you depend on it.
