Residence visa, Emirates ID, and the RAKEZ self-sponsorship route

The mechanics are federal. Your sponsor obtains the work permit and the ICP entry permit; you complete a medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics; the residence visa is issued digitally, with no sticker in the passport. The Emirates ID is your proof of residency and the key to banking, a postpaid SIM, a registered tenancy and a driving licence, and the file must be completed within 60 days of entry. What is distinctive about Ras Al Khaimah is who the sponsor usually is: RAKEZ licences a company for a fraction of Dubai free-zone costs, and that company then sponsors visas for you and your family, which makes self-sponsorship a realistic path rather than a luxury one.

Total cost
Employer-sponsored packages typically run AED 3,000–7,000 all-in for two years and are employer-borne. Self-sponsorship through a RAKEZ licence costs the licence plus the visa package — entry-level zero-visa licences start in the low thousands of dirhams a year, with a licence plus one visa commonly in the mid-teens of thousands.
Time needed
About two to three weeks once the sponsor starts, against a hard 60-day window from entry that you are personally liable for.
Validity
A standard private-sector residence visa and Emirates ID run two years and renew together with a fresh medical and insurance. An employer-sponsored visa dies with the job. A self-sponsored free-zone visa continues as long as the licence is renewed — which is precisely why people take it. The five-year Green visa and ten-year Golden visa are alternatives if you meet their thresholds.

Medium confidence·Employer-sponsored professionals on a mainland MoHRE contract, and — the route most foreigners actually take here — people who form a company through RAKEZ and sponsor their own residence visa through it.

Before you start

  • Either a signed MoHRE-attested contract with a RAK-licensed employer, or a RAKEZ (or other free zone) company licence with visa quota attached to it
  • A passport valid at least six months with blank pages, and photographs to ICP specification
  • Valid UAE health insurance, which is mandatory for issuance and renewal nationwide
  • An attested degree certificate where the role or licence activity requires one

Step-by-step

  1. 1

Decide whether you are being sponsored or sponsoring yourself

An employer route is simple but ties your residency to the job. A RAKEZ company licence with a visa allocation lets you sponsor yourself and your dependants, at a licence cost well below Dubai's equivalents. That is the choice that shapes everything downstream, including your corporate tax position.

  2. 2

Sponsor secures the work permit and entry permit

A mainland employer applies through MoHRE and the federal ICP. A free-zone company applies through RAKEZ's own establishment card channel. The entry permit starts the 60-day clock for completing residency.

Via employerWho: Your employer or your own free-zone companyRoughly 3–7 working days
  3. 3

Activate the permit, usually without leaving the country

If you are already inside the UAE on a visit or other status, an in-country change of status is filed. Confirm this before booking a flight out — the old visa-run assumption is out of date for most applicants.

Via employerWho: Your sponsor's PRO2–5 working days
  4. 4

    Take the medical fitness test

Mandatory for residents aged 18 and over: a blood test and a chest X-ray for tuberculosis at an approved RAK screening centre. An active communicable disease can mean refusal. Results generally return within a day or two.

In personWho: YouSame-day visit, results in 24–48 hours
  5. 5

Give Emirates ID biometrics and receive the digital visa

Fingerprints, a facial scan and a photograph at an ICP-approved centre; the residency file cannot complete without them. The residence permit is then issued electronically and downloadable from the UAEICP app. Note the Emirates ID number as soon as it exists — banks and telecoms can often start on the number before the card is printed.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Self-sponsorship through RAKEZ is the reason to be here, and the arithmetic is the argument.

A RAKEZ licence gives you the same UAE residency machinery, the same Emirates ID and the same zero personal income tax as a Dubai free-zone company, at a licence cost that is a fraction of Dubai's better-known zones. Entry-level zero-visa packages start in the low thousands of dirhams a year. For a solo consultant that difference is real money every year, indefinitely.

A self-sponsored visa survives losing a client. An employer-sponsored one does not survive losing a job.

Employer sponsorship ties your residency, your family's residency and your bank account to a single employment relationship, with only a grace period if it ends. A free-zone company you own keeps sponsoring you as long as you renew the licence. People weigh only the upfront cost and miss that they are also buying independence from one company's HR decisions.

The 60-day clock is your liability even when someone else does the paperwork.

Your active duties are the medical and the biometrics; the PRO handles the rest. But the 60-day completion window runs from your entry and overstay fines accrue against the applicant, not the sponsor. In a smaller emirate with fewer PRO firms, a slow file is a real risk — track each stage and start chasing well before day sixty.

There is no visa sticker, and small-emirate landlords still ask for one.

Since 2022 the residence permit outside Dubai is entirely digital. Landlords, banks and overseas officials who ask to see 'the visa stamp' should be shown the Emirates ID or the residence-permit PDF from the UAEICP app. It catches people more here than in Dubai simply because Dubai is the one emirate that still issues stickers, so guides keep describing them.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Following Dubai's GDRFA or Ejari-based instructions in Ras Al Khaimah, where neither applies.
  • Choosing employer sponsorship without pricing the self-sponsored RAKEZ alternative.
  • Assuming you must fly out to activate a permit when an in-country status change is standard.
  • Missing the 60-day completion window because the sponsor's PRO stalled — the fines land on you.
  • Shipping belongings or signing a lease before you have passed the medical fitness test.
