Banking, BLIK, and getting paid in euros

Opening an account is straightforward and Polish retail banking is genuinely excellent. Do two things deliberately: issue your profil zaufany through the bank app, because it now gates the MOS residence filing, and — if you will be paid in a foreign currency — open a currency sub-account and understand that Polish tax accounting converts your invoices at the National Bank's published rate, not at the rate you actually received.

Total cost
Current accounts are typically free subject to a minimum monthly inflow or a few card transactions. Domestic transfers and BLIK are free. Currency conversion inside a Polish bank carries a spread of 2–4%, which is the cost worth avoiding.
Time needed
Same day to a few days.
Validity
No renewal, though banks re-verify identity documents and will restrict transfers if the one on file has expired.

Medium confidence·New arrivals, and anyone who will invoice a German, Swiss or Nordic client from a Polish registration — a common pattern in Wrocław given the border is 160 km away.

Before you start

  • Passport and residence document, visa or EU registration certificate
  • PESEL, preferred by most banks
  • A Polish address
  • CEIDG registration and NIP, for a business account

Step-by-step

  1. 1

Choose on English-language service and multicurrency support

mBank, ING, Santander Bank Polska and Millennium have strong English apps and free currency sub-accounts. PKO BP and Pekao are larger but their branch service is effectively Polish-only.

    Open the account

Several banks onboard fully online with courier identity verification. Where a branch visit is needed, confirm English service at that specific branch before travelling to it.

  3. 3

Issue the trusted profile in the same session

Your bank can create your profil zaufany in minutes. It unlocks e-PIT, NFZ services and the MOS residence portal, and doing it now saves an appointment at a government office later.

    Activate BLIK

Six-digit codes generated in the app for online payment, cardless ATM withdrawal and instant transfers by phone number. Near-universal in Poland and the reason you will carry almost no cash.

Open a EUR sub-account if you invoice abroad

Polish banks provide free currency sub-accounts with their own IBAN. Being paid into a PLN account from a euro-area client means the bank converts at its own spread, which is materially worse than converting when you choose to.

Open a business account before your first invoice

Sole traders report a business account to the tax authority, and only business accounts can be listed on the Ministry of Finance whitelist. Personal accounts cannot.

Things most newcomers don’t know

For tax, your euro invoice is converted at the NBP rate — not the rate you got.

Polish law converts foreign-currency revenue at the National Bank of Poland average rate published on the last working day before the invoice date. Your actual conversion happens whenever your bank or broker does it, at a different rate. The difference is a taxable exchange gain or loss you must record separately. Wrocław contractors invoicing German clients discover this in their first year-end.

Your bank issues the digital identity your immigration filing depends on.

Since MOS became the only channel for residence applications in April 2026, the profil zaufany moved from convenience to prerequisite. Getting it inside a banking app takes minutes and needs no appointment; getting it at a government office needs a slot you would rather spend on something else. It also unlocks e-PIT and NFZ services.

A whitelisted business account is not optional if you invoice at scale.

Payments over PLN 15,000 must reach an account on the Ministry of Finance whitelist or the paying company loses its deduction and can be jointly liable for VAT. Personal accounts cannot be whitelisted. Corporate clients in Wrocław check this automatically, and being paid into a personal account is a problem you find out about from their accounts department.

Some banks will onboard you before PESEL, which is worth knowing early.

Because the trusted profile and therefore the residence filing depend on having a bank account, waiting on PESEL creates an avoidable bottleneck. Several banks open accounts for foreigners on a passport and visa with a reduced product set, then upgrade once PESEL exists. Ask the question explicitly instead of accepting the first no.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Receiving euro payments into a PLN account and losing 2–4% to the bank's spread each time.
  • Recording revenue at the rate you received rather than the NBP rate required for tax.
  • Invoicing Polish companies into a personal account that cannot be whitelisted.
  • Delaying the trusted profile and blocking the MOS residence filing behind it.
  • Letting the residence document on file expire and having outgoing transfers frozen.
