Start with geography

A natural inlet on a shallow coast

Much of the southern Gulf coast is shallow, with sandbars and few natural harbours. Dubai Creek is a saltwater inlet running inland from the coast, and it provided something scarce here: sheltered water where boats could load, unload and shelter.

Settlement grew along both banks — Bur Dubai on one side, Deira on the other — with the creek as the shared centre rather than a boundary. Long before the towers, the creek was the reason there was a town.
