Istanbul's historic peninsula is surrounded on three sides by water: the Bosphorus to the east, the Golden Horn to the north, the Sea of Marmara to the south. The Bosphorus is the only sea passage between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, and it is narrow enough to control.

The Golden Horn matters just as much and gets discussed less. It is a deep, sheltered inlet — a natural harbour on the doorstep of a defensible peninsula. Control of a strait plus a good harbour plus a site that is hard to attack from land is an unusual combination, and it is the whole reason this location keeps being chosen.
