Small, and in the right place

The Ryukyu Islands run in an arc between Kyushu and Taiwan. That is not much land, and it is a very good position: within reach of Japan, China, Korea and the ports of Southeast Asia, and on the way between them.

The kingdom unified in the fifteenth century and made a business of that geography. It sent tribute missions to Ming China and took Chinese goods onward to Japan, Korea, Siam and Melaka, and brought Southeast Asian goods back. It kept no significant military. Its security came from being useful to everybody and threatening to nobody — a strategy that works precisely as long as it works.
