Before you start
- Passport and an eVisa share code
- A UK mobile number
- A Coventry-area address, for a traditional bank
- Proof of that address — a tenancy agreement, a council tax bill or an employer letter
Step-by-step

Open a digital bank account on day one
Monzo, Starling, Revolut and others verify you from a passport photograph and a short video selfie, without proof of address. You get a UK sort code and account number within hours, which unlocks a tenancy, a salary and a phone contract.

Work out which council the address is in before you sign
Coventry City Council is a compact metropolitan district. Kenilworth and Balsall Common are Warwick district, Bedworth and Nuneaton are Nuneaton and Bedworth, Berkswell is Solihull. Different Council Tax rates, different school admissions, and Coventry's HMO licensing schemes stop at the boundary. Enter the postcode on GOV.UK's council finder.

The occupier pays it, not the landlord, and it is billed separately from rent, usually over ten instalments. Coventry's 2026/27 charges are £1,677.39 at Band A, £1,956.96 at Band B, £2,236.53 at Band C and £2,516.09 at Band D. Claim the 25% single-occupant discount or the full all-student exemption if either applies — neither is applied automatically, and with two universities the student exemption is one of the most commonly missed entitlements here.

Consider a building society as well as a bank
Coventry Building Society is headquartered in the city and is one of the largest mutuals in Britain, and it has taken on a full retail bank. Building societies are owned by their members rather than shareholders, are covered by the same deposit protection as banks, and often price savings and mortgages differently. In a city where one of them is a major local employer, it is worth comparing rather than defaulting to a high-street name.

Ask HR for an address letter if you want a high-street bank
Most banks accept an employer letter confirming your address in place of a utility bill. Warwick, Coventry University, University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, JLR and the council all issue these routinely for international staff — ask rather than waiting for a bill you cannot yet generate.

Know the legal ceiling on what you can be asked for up front
A deposit is capped at five weeks' rent, and since the Renters' Rights Act a landlord in England cannot demand more than one month's rent in advance. Letting agent fees to tenants have been banned since 2019. Anything beyond that is not a negotiating position — it is unlawful.

Things most newcomers don’t know
Council Tax is a bigger share of your housing cost here than the headline rent suggests.
£2,516.09 at Band D, and £1,677.39 even at Band A, against rents that often start under £800 a month. In a low-rent city the property tax is not a rounding error — it is comfortably a fifth of the bill, and comparison sites that quote 'average rent' for Coventry consistently understate the real cost.

The city boundary is tight and the places you would call Coventry often are not.
Kenilworth, Balsall Common, Bedworth and Berkswell all feel like Coventry's hinterland and all are billed by different councils. That changes the Council Tax rate, the school admissions rules and whether Coventry's HMO licensing schemes apply. Check the postcode before you compare two properties.

There is a hard legal cap on the money you must find to move in.
Five weeks' deposit plus a maximum of one month's rent in advance, and no agent fees. Landlords used to ask overseas tenants with no UK credit history for six or twelve months up front; that demand is no longer lawful in England and you can decline it citing the Act rather than negotiating.

A mutual is a genuine alternative here, not a curiosity.
Coventry Building Society is headquartered in the city and now owns a full retail bank. Deposits with a building society are protected by the same scheme as bank deposits, and mutuals frequently price savings and mortgages differently because they answer to members rather than shareholders. Worth a comparison, particularly for savings.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing two rents without comparing the Council Tax bands behind them.
- Assuming an address is in Coventry when it is billed by Warwick district, Nuneaton and Bedworth, or Solihull.
- Not claiming the 25% single-occupant discount or the all-student exemption.
- Agreeing to six months' rent up front, which is no longer lawful in England.
- Trying a high-street bank first, before you have any proof of address.
