eVisas, share codes and your National Insurance number
The UK has moved entirely to digital immigration status. UKVI stopped issuing visa vignette stickers to successful new applicants on 1 July 2026, and BRP cards are no longer issued. Your status lives in a UKVI account as an eVisa and you prove it by generating a share code. You also need a National Insurance number, which can only be applied for from inside the UK. Coventry's two universities recruit heavily internationally, so employers and letting agents here handle student and Skilled Worker paperwork constantly — which works in your favour if you know what to ask for.

What to know before you go
Coventry licensed the small shared houses in May 2025, and most online advice has not caught up
CriticalTwo schemes now stack here. The national mandatory scheme has always covered HMOs occupied by five or more people forming more than one household. On top of it, an additional licensing designation made on 7 October 2024 and in force from 4 May 2025 extends licensing to HMOs with fewer than five occupants and to properties without shared amenities — which is precisely the kind of converted terrace or subdivided flat a single newcomer or a couple of students ends up in. If you are taking a room or a small self-contained unit in a converted house, ask to see the licence. Almost every guide, forum post and letting listing written before mid-2025 assumes the old position, and an unlicensed licensable property is an offence by the landlord, not by you.
Coventry has no clean air charge and Birmingham charges private cars twenty minutes away
CriticalCoventry is not among the seven operating Clean Air Zones on GOV.UK — Bath, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth, Sheffield and Tyneside — so no vehicle pays to drive here. Birmingham's zone is Class D, the strictest class, and charges non-compliant private cars daily. Coventry and Birmingham are twenty minutes apart by train and half an hour by road, and people commute, shop and take meetings between them constantly. If you buy an older diesel because Coventry does not charge, check its compliance against the Birmingham zone before you assume it is free to drive to a client there.
Section 21 no-fault eviction is gone, and your tenancy has no end date
CriticalThe Renters' Rights Act converted every assured shorthold tenancy in England into a periodic assured tenancy from 1 May 2026. There is no fixed term to expire: you can give two months' notice at any point, and a landlord can only end the tenancy on a specified statutory ground. Rental bidding is unlawful — a landlord must advertise a price and cannot invite or accept more than it — and no more than one month's rent may be demanded in advance. In a city with two large universities and a very large purpose-built student sector, this is a real shift: you are no longer bound to a September-to-July year.
There is no visa sticker and no BRP card — your status is an online record
CriticalUKVI stopped issuing visa vignette stickers to successful new applicants on 1 July 2026, and biometric residence permits ended before that. Your permission exists as an eVisa in a UKVI account, and you prove it by generating a share code for a specific purpose, which an employer or landlord enters online. Set the account up and check every detail before you fly — there is no physical document to fall back on if the record is wrong.
Apply for a National Insurance number in your first week
CriticalYou can only apply from inside the UK, so it cannot be arranged in advance. Payroll needs it to tax you correctly; without it you can work legally but will usually be put on an emergency tax code and have to reclaim. Check first whether you already have one printed in the remarks on an old BRP card.
The University of Warwick is in Coventry, and the ring road is harder than it looks
ImportantTwo orientation facts that cost newcomers real time. First, the University of Warwick sits on Coventry's southern edge with a Coventry postal address; the town of Warwick is eleven miles away and has no university. People book accommodation, trains and interviews in the wrong place every single year. Second, the ring road is a 2.25-mile elevated loop with junctions roughly 300 metres apart and slip roads that weave across one another — it is one of the most demanding pieces of urban road in Britain to drive cold. Know your junction number before you join it, and stay in lane.

The University of Warwick is a Russell Group institution on Coventry's southern edge, and WMG — its manufacturing research group — is one of the largest university–industry engineering partnerships in Europe. Between Warwick and Coventry University the city has one of the youngest median ages of any English city.

'Silicon Spa' around Leamington and Warwick is one of the densest concentrations of video-game development in Europe, and it is a twenty-minute train ride from Coventry station. A very large share of the people who work there live in Coventry, because the housing is cheaper and the trains are frequent.

Coventry Building Society is one of the largest mutuals in Britain and is headquartered in the city rather than in London, which gives Coventry a genuine financial-services employment base — a rarity for a Midlands manufacturing city. Its acquisition of The Co-operative Bank added a full retail bank to that.

Coventry sits at the junction of the M6, M69, M45 and M40 within an hour of most of England's population, which is why so much national distribution runs through Warwickshire. Combined with the engineering base it makes this one of the strongest regions in the country for supply chain and manufacturing roles.

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire runs the major trauma centre for the region from the Walsgrave site on the north-east edge of the city, alongside Warwick Medical School. It is one of the largest single employers in Coventry.

Coventry Cathedral — the ruins and the new
Landmark · City centre, Priory Street
The roofless shell of the fourteenth-century cathedral destroyed in the raid of 14 November 1940, standing beside Basil Spence's 1962 replacement with Graham Sutherland's tapestry and Epstein's St Michael on the wall outside.
Local tip: Go into the ruins first. The morning after the bombing the cathedral stonemason wired two charred roof beams into a cross and someone chalked 'Father Forgive' on the wall behind the altar — not 'forgive them'. That decision, made in 1940 in a flattened city, is why Coventry became the world's first town-twinning city and why it twinned with Dresden. The new cathedral is superb 1960s architecture, but it only means anything after the ruins.
Coventry Transport Museum
Culture · Millennium Place, city centre
The largest publicly owned collection of British road transport in the world, free to enter, holding Thrust2 and ThrustSSC — the two cars that took the world land speed record past the sound barrier.
Local tip: It is free, which people do not believe, and the collection is enormous because Coventry made bicycles, then motorcycles, then cars, in that order and in that place. ThrustSSC is still the fastest car ever driven and it is sitting in a municipal museum in the middle of England. Go on a weekday and you will have it nearly to yourself.
FarGo Village & the Canal Basin
Neighborhood · Far Gosford Street, east of the ring road
A creative quarter of independent shops, record stores, breweries and street food in a set of converted industrial units, with the Coventry Canal Basin and the towpath a short walk away.
Local tip: This is where the independent side of the city actually is, rather than in the rebuilt precinct. The Coventry Canal starts at the Basin and runs north — the towpath is flat, off-road and takes you out of the city past Longford to Hawkesbury Junction, which is the best walk or cycle from the centre.
Spon Street & the medieval city
Culture · West of the city centre, beside the ring road
A short street of timber-framed medieval buildings — some original to the site, some carefully moved there in the 1970s — surviving from the city that the Blitz and the rebuild otherwise erased.
Local tip: Coventry was one of the great medieval English cities, richer than most and with more surviving timber framing than almost anywhere until November 1940. Spon Street is what is left, plus the Guildhall of St Mary near the cathedral, which is one of the finest medieval guildhalls in the country and is routinely missed.
War Memorial Park
Nature · Kenilworth Road, south of the centre
A 121-acre park laid out in the 1920s in memory of the city's First World War dead, with mature avenues, a memorial obelisk, sports pitches and the Godiva Festival each summer.
Local tip: It is the city's main green space and it is genuinely good — big enough to lose the traffic noise, and on the walking route out toward Warwick University and Kenilworth. The Godiva Festival in the park is free and one of the largest free festivals in the country.
Coventry Charterhouse
Hidden gemCulture · London Road, on the River Sherbourne south-east of the centre
A fourteenth-century Carthusian priory, restored and reopened to the public, containing rare medieval wall paintings including a Crucifixion, set in seventy acres of heritage park along the river.
Local tip: It survived the Reformation by becoming a private house, then a school, and it holds wall paintings of a quality that would be a headline attraction in a cathedral city. It reopened after a long restoration and is still barely known even inside Coventry. The park around it is free and connects to the river walk.
